Interesting trip with beautiful scenery in Guatemala, fascinating Mayan ruins in Mexico (but take a good archaelogical guide like Michael Coe's "The Maya" 11th edition, 2011) interspersed with old colonial Spanish towns and great snorkelling and boat trips to see manatees and dolphins near the mangrove islands off Caye Caulker, Belize. Lot of travelling in the bus but worth it on balance.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Lake Atitlan, Guatemala with its towering volcanos is incredibly beautiful at all times of day. Seeing the manatees off Caye Caulker was special as well and, although one does get tired of Mayan ruins, they are pretty amazing objectively especially Palenque and Tikal. Chitzen Itza gets too busy with tourists to feel special
What did you think of your group leader?
He was fine though not as good as the leaders we have had on other trips. This was his last trip working for Exodus so slightly akward situation.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    My main points would be:-

    (a) Someone on a previous exodus trip advises people to take pesos as difficult/not good rate to change.  We followed this advice but found it to be wrong. It was easy to change money on our trip and US dollars could be used freely in Guatemala, Mexico and Belize. Some of our party used ATMs.

    (b) Remember country entrance/exit fees. They add up though you are not always charged when leaving Guatemala.

    (c) If you love textiles, buy them at Lake Atitlan (or Santiago Atitlan/San Marcos La Laguna). You just dont see as good/as great a variety elsewhere on the trip. There is a school shop near where you get the boat to Santiago Atitlan that sells lovely things in aid of the children's education

    (d) Aquashoes useful as beaches quite stony. Quite a variation in temperature so need warm jumpers for altitude/night but light clothes for day. Binoculars a must for bird life and sea scanning for manatees.

    (e) Vegetarian options can be a bit limited and traveller's diarrohea can hit hard even when taking care with handwashing/sanigel or equivalent!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Its quite a hard trip by way of the amount of bus travel and you really have to accept that or the trip is not for you. The Guatemalan highlands/Mexican border is lovely but a lot of Mexican travel is on plains that is not that interesting in itself. I wished I had some Spanish to make for a better interaction when saying 'no thanks' re people travelling to sell stuff. As said earlier a good academic book about the Mayan ruins that is up to date will add to the trip as you can look up detail/ reinforce understanding when on the long bus journeys. I wouldnt have enjoyed the ruins nearly as much if I hadnt had Coe's book with me as our guide wasnt that clear about the differences between the sites and the key features of the ruins to note. Would thoroughly recommend the all day manatee/snorkelling trip with lunch at St George's (private aquarium there that you can visit for $2.50 that has lion fish, puffer fish etc.) Karly Bischoff aged 10 showed us round and he was brilliant. Really knew his stuff!!

Exodus do describe this trip clearly, so maybe it’s our fault for not appreciating that it does try to cram too much into too short a time. As a result the abiding memories are that: (1) We had too many long stints on less-than-luxurious buses. (2) There were so many visits to so many Mayan ruin sites that they all seem to telescope together and become one jumbled memory, and (3) We always seemed to arrive at overnight stops too late, and leave too early to enjoy the quite nice hotels (although one was absolutely dire) and the seductive towns we stopped at.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

My wife says that if it hadn’t been pouring with rain, and if we hadn’t spent the previous night at a dreadful hotel, the visit to Palenque would have been “inspirational”. She also makes positive noises about Uxmal and Tikal.

But, for me, although I enjoyed Campeche, Tulum and Caye Caulker, there really was nothing on this trip that I'd call “inspirational” – and I frequently found myself wondering why we’d forked out all that money. (We’ve done quite a bit of long-haul travel, and a great deal within Europe; and we have found most of these "inspirational". But this was our first ever guided group tour, and I’m still not sure whether it was the group structure, the guidance or the location that made it one of our least satisfactory trips.)

What did you think of your group leader?

José was knowledgeable, well-meaning and a nice guy. But he was clearly nervous and during the first few days his management and organisational skills were sadly lacking. His briefings were rambling, unclear and incomplete, and his many jokes ceased pretty quickly to be funny; he was also bad at keeping the group together, and came close to losing people. By the end of day 5, most of us had “taken him to one side for a chat”, and it was noticeable that his performance improved significantly thereafter.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Buy your local currency (with a “buy-back guarantee”) before departure. The exchange rates you’ll get “in country” can be pretty poor, and, the currency exchange process is hugely time-consuming and irritating. Despite what the Exodus trip notes tell you, the US$ is not king (although it works well in Belize); you will need local currency for most things in the countries you visit. We found that £30 per head per day covered everything (including many cocktails for Herself!).

A lot of the places this trip calls at are at quite high altitude, and it’s worth reinforcing that, if you’re travelling outside high summer, you’ll definitely need something warm for the evenings, as well as some seriously good but light rain gear.

Watch your luggage like a hawk at all times (one of our party only just managed to stop their luggage being accidentally loaded onto the wrong tour bus !)

All the hotels we stopped at had free wi-fi, but phone coverage is very patchy (3G almost non-existent) and very expensive.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Here are some worthwhile improvements Exodus might consider:

    - Instead of making us spend ½ an hour on our first morning filling out forms (listing insurance policies, passport details, medication, next of kin, etc), supply the forms in advance, so that those who want to can fill them out before departure.

    - Each morning at breakfast hand out a brief typed “plan for the day” (where we’re going, where and when we’ll stop, where and when to meet, what kit we need – eg swimming gear, walking shoes, etc – the name and address of that night’s hotel, and so forth [we found it nigh impossible to extract this information from José in the early stages of the trip]).

    - Tell us in advance what sort of money to lay aside for tips (it transpires that you’re expected to tip the Group leader, three bus drivers, the bell boys at each hotel, a tour guide at each of the sites you visit, and sundry others - at many of the “comfort stops” you’ll have to pay to go to the loo!).

    - Use buses suitable for European-sized people to sit on for long stretches.

    Exodus Response

    Dear Richard,
Thank you for reviewing your recent trip to Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. I was sorry to hear that you felt the trip didn’t live up to your expectations. We describe the trip as “an in-depth exploration of the highlights of the Mayan world”, which, as you pointed out, is an accurate portrayal of what is involved. Given the many important historical sites to visit in this area we do need to cover a fair amount of distance in order to see them. We feel that this is balanced with time spent in the colourful colonial cities of Antigua, Campeche, Merida and San Cristobal de las Casas, as well as 2 night stays at both Lake Atitlan and Caye Caulker, where the trip emphasis shifts towards relaxation.

The hotels that we use on this trip tend to be a real highlight for our clients. We have reviewed the use of the property that you mentioned you didn’t enjoy and are due to change this for upcoming departures. In regard to transport, I have discussed your concerns about the bus with our in-country manager and he has assured me that we are using the best buses available within the countries visited. Unfortunately the road conditions are poor in places and this can increase the journey times. Local guides do receive regular training as part of their work with Exodus, but in our next session we will emphasize the importance of providing clear and accurate briefings – I am sorry for any confusion this caused you. I believe that our Trip Notes are very comprehensive and contain all of the essential information for this trip but I will be updating them shortly with the most recent information that I have obtained regarding currency, tipping, airport taxes and fees.
With kind regards, Vicky Boughton (Trip Manager)

A great trip with surprises throughout - good and not so good - with fabulous landscape and Mayan magnificence along the way.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Standing on the mountainside looking out over Lake Atitlan in the Guatemalan highlands.... the lake was magical in the warm sunshine, surrounded by its guardian volcanoes.

Snorkelling with nurse sharks and sting rays off Caye Caulker, Belize - very cool.

Standing at the top of the pyramid at Uxmal and looking at the buildings rising up through the trees.

What did you think of your group leader?
The group leader was good but certainly not the best I have had on Exodus trips (this was my 8th or 9th trip with Exodus). He knew his stuff but couldn't put it across succinctly and was very prone to "waffle". But he was a friendly guy who mixed in well with the group and managed the logistics well.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Bring something warm to wear at night in the Guatemalan highlands and the first section of the Yucutan peninsula - it gets cold especially in winter - I hadn't realised that San cristobal is at 2200m altitude!

Don't have high expectations of the food - perhaps we were unlucky but the restaurants where we ate were decidely average and sometimes less than that.

If you can get a flight routing that avoids Houston or Miami, go for it. We went out via Dallas and that was so easy - no crowds. On the way back via Miami we queued for 2 hours at immigration and others who went via Houston had worse experiences.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
This is a trip for history buffs and those who love great landscape - there are visits to 6 Mayan sites in 3 countries so expect to be pretty ruined-out by the end of the trip. Mix that in with fabulous landscapes - it's not every day you get to drive towards a volcano across a lake in a speedboat! - and you have the recipe for an enthralling trip.

Great holiday building up to the climax of Tikal-the best site I've visited. Great contrast of scenery, towns  and always fabulous food. Caye Caulker is great to chill out on but is not full of tropical beaches asI'd expected.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Tikal, especially as there was a tropical storm shortly after we arrived which added to the atmosphere of the place and brought the animals to life. Views from the top of the monuments are sensational and definitely worth the climb even for vertigo sufferers.
What did you think of your group leader?
Jose was very good in his knowledge of the area. Also excellent English. Good choice of restuarants. Sometimes seemed over-anxious that everyone was enjoying themselves-fault on the right side!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Some long drives and quite uncomfortable in Mexico as villagers build speed bumps at highly regular intervals.

A great way to experience different cultures and learn a great deal of history about the Mayans and the Spanish Conquistadors. Great scenery, great sites, generally great weather and a meat eaters paradise.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Easily the most inspirational moment has to be at Palenque where, after a 5 minute talk by the tour guide just inside the entrance, you walk round the corner and suddenly, right in front of you, sits a massive mayan pyramid. It just takes your breath away.

Likewise, on visiting Tikal, being able to see Howler Monkeys and squirrel Monkeys at close quarters was amazing.

What did you think of your group leader?
The group leader was knowledgeable, friendly and really looked after us. He went out of his way to ensure we were ok and that we were doing things on the trip that we wanted to do.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

It is worth noting that for the majority of the holiday the weather (Mexico and Belize particularly) is very hot and humid and you should pack accordingly. However, it can get quite cold in San Cristobal so suggest layers!

Bottled water is readily available everywhere so we didn't need the purification tablets we packed. Mosquito repellent, however, is definitely needed!!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

We were not sure what to expect from this holiday but we had an absolutely fantastic time and would highly recommend it to anyone.

The local beer is excellent too!! (Gallo in Guatemala & Belikin in Belize particularly). Try it and I bet you don't disagree!!  (I'd just like to point out that last bit was added by my husband!!!).

This was our 4th Exodus tour and it ranked 4th behind 3 brilliant ones.  It was good and enjoyable but somehow lacked excitement.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Visiting the church where they smoked, drank alcohol and slaughtered chickens and the first of the Mayan site.
What did you think of your group leader?
The group leader, Jose, was good, but not the best ever
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Whilst the Mayan sites are very interesting, they are after all just piles of stones. The Mexicans make no attempt to recreate the lifestyles of rulers, priests or ordinary people which, I Think, would add more colour and depth to the stories.

It was a fantastic trip delivering much more than I had expected from the trip notes. One of the best things about it was the range of things to do an see, from amazing Mayan ruins, to stunning lakes and volcanoes to fantastic Caribbean beaches.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Seeing Chichen Itza was just amazing. It really gave a sense of the scale of the Mayan cities and the ingenuity of the architects. Quite stunning. Lake Atitlan is just breathtaking and the sunsets there over the volcanoes are something that everyone should see.
What did you think of your group leader?
The Group leader was amazing. She had a fantastic knowledge of the area, including all the best places to eat and drink! She was very enthusiastic and energetic throughout the whole trip, possibly something to do the monster drinks!
