There is one photo that has made me want to visit the area for years and luckily for me I found the spot, the sun was shining and my own photo turned out pretty good too! Many other beautiful and interesting places but wouldn't bother visiting Naples itself again.
- What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
I don't think "inspirational" really fits this holiday. I loved the views and the coastline. Ravello and the Villa Rufolo were my favourite, but I think Capri would have been amazing if the weather had been good.
Pompeii was better than I expected and Mount Vesuvius walk a must but we were again unlucky that the cloud came down whilst we were up the top so didn't get the great view I'd hoped for.
- What did you think of your group leader?
He was not quite what I was expecting but he tried hard to get things right for us. It was good that he was a true Italian, and a gentleman. Unfortunately communication wasn't great. We were taken on a quick march through parts of Naples because he had arranged for us to eat in a real locals only restaurant, but we didn't know that until we were almost pushed in the door, and I wasn't happy being more or less forced to eat (and pay for) a meal that I didn't want. He was really pleased to get us into that restaurant as he said we were I think the first British to visit. There was a huge queue outside and it was very popular and I feel rather ungrateful. Also, he gave us no information about Capri which was a shame. We were unable to do the lovely boat trip along the coast for our visit to Capri and so he arranged a "transfer" to Sorrento so that we could get the ferry. The Transfer was in two mini buses driven one by him and the other by one of the brothers who own the hotel. What he didn't tell us was that we would have to pay 25euros each for that until we were waiting to go to dinner on the final evening. Several people were upset about that, including me and at least one didn't pay. I was in the embarassing situation of having to say that I had not got the cash and the machine in town had been out of order all week. I had to put it onto my hotel bill and pay it that way.The evening was almost spoiled by this. There was another Exodus trip staying in the hotel. We were put on different sides of the restaurant and as there were no other guests it was a bit odd. It was especially uncomfortable at the final evening meal when the other group did "thank you" speaches to their leader and presented her with a tip etc. Members of our group had decided that they didn't want to do anything like that. One lady on the trip had lots of attention and help from the Leader for whom he went out of his way for.
- Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If you go early in the season the weather might mean that you miss both the offered boat trips as we did.
The Walk of the Gods is a lovely walk but for people of my height (5ft) very tricky in places as there is a fair bit of rock climbing up and down on the path as well as the flat stuff. It was not an easy walk but worth the effort. A stick would definately be a help but the taller people shouldn't find it a problem. If you want to do the walk but can't face the steps at the end there is a bus that you can get that takes you right into Positano. The best value bus ride I've ever had at 1 euro.
If you are a teacher then take your ID because you can get into Pompeii and the Museum in Naples for half price.
- Is there anything else you would like to add?
I thought that the cost of the Museum in Naples was part of the trip but we had to pay for that. The Museum is a bit all over the place and not sure that it is worth bothering with the audio guide. I also was unprepared to pay 10 Euros (each) to the guide that we had at the Herculaneum and again at Pompeii.
It was an enjoyable holiday with a mix of people. The hotel was lovely and welcoming and the food plentiful and good. The town of Bomerano doesn't have a lot going for it but it is a good base for trips in all directions. The only cash machine was out of order for the whole week! We were lucky with the weather and the few bits of rain didn't spoil the trip. It would have been good to have longer on Capri and it was disappointing that we didn't get the 2 boat trips.
Needed twice as much money as I had taken due to the guides, Museum, meal in Naples, and the unexpected transfer costs.
