This trip visits as much as possible in Russia's two most fascinating cities. There is a lot to see in a week yet the pace is not rushed and plenty of time is left each day for self-exploration.
Should you choose to take part in all the offered optional activities, the week will seem more demanding.
Although this itinerary is mostly based on sightseeing, please be prepared for a reasonable amount of walking between sites.
For the overnight train journey, we use second class compartments that comprise of 4 berths and are of a reasonable standard, with bed linen provided.
Entrances are included for . On occasion, the government may choose to close Lenin's Mausoleum or even Red Square without warning. As all museums (except the History Museum) are closed on Mondays then it is best to organise your free time for day 2 in advance.
Please note Russia is quite expensive - see our extra expenses section for further advice. If you are travelling during June, July and August then please be prepared for queues and crowds at major sites, such as the Armoury, Catherine's Palace and the Hermitage.
Should you require tickets for either the recently renovated Bolshoy Theater in Moscow or Mariinskiy Theater in St Petersburg then please book your tickets direct via their websites (see Optional Excursions in the Trip Notes for details). Due to limited availability at certain times of the year and the theatres only being available to book 3-6 months in advance then we are unable to provide this service. Exodus are happy to assist where possible with confirming dates you will be in each city and to book other excursions such as Moscow Circus or a boat tour in St Petersburg.
Normal group size and age
Normally 8 to 20, plus leader, drivers and city guides. Minimum age 16.
The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together. All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please see our Solo Departures page.
Designed for people who are in good health, enjoy the outdoors and want a relaxing trip packed with interest.
Culture: Let Exodus show you a different side to many of the world's greatest cultural attractions.
