Frequently Asked Questions
About Your Trip
What's the standard of accommodation like in Uzbekistan?
All hotels are comfortable 3 star hotels with en suite facilities, although being Central Asia, this isn't always the same as Western 3 star standard. There is 1 night spent in a Kazakh yurt whilst in the Kysylkum desert. This is a large communal tent that sleeps approximately 5 people and the leader. Foam mattresses are provided but you must bring your own sleeping liner.

What is the weather like in Central Asia?
These areas of Central Asia have long, extremely hot summers, but the winters are very cold. The July and August departures may be rather hot with afternoon temperatures often reaching 35ºC. Other trips are planned for Spring and Autumn when the temperature should not be below 5ºC at night and may be up to 25-30ºC during the day. Sunny weather with clear blue skies should be experienced but there can be some rain at this time of year. Occasionally periods of unexpectedly hot or cold weather can be experienced.

What are facilities like in Uzbekistan?
This is a generally undemanding trip with reasonable roads and time for sightseeing. Most of the accommodation is modest but clean, mostly with private facilities. This is an extremely rewarding trip for those wishing to get to the heart of Central Asia and who are prepared to deal with long drives, early starts/long days and hot (but also sometimes rather cold) temperatures.
However, it must not be forgotten that until 1991 Uzbekistan was part of the USSR and tourist services and facilities can still be patchy and erratic. Tolerance and flexibility are required, and for this you will be rewarded with an insight into local life!

How basic is the night in the Uzbek yurt?
You spend 1 night at traditional Yurt camps. The camp consist of 5- 6 Yurts, there are basic washing facilities with simple basins (hot water can be heated on request) but no showers, toilet tent/basic outhouse and a dining yurt. Depending on group size and availability at the camp, you could be sharing up to 8 people (however it is more likely to be 2-4 people). According to local custom, the yurts may be divided by gender when higher occupation is necessary. Please note that the camps do have generator electricity, but because of the remoteness it may be inconsistent We strongly recommend that you fully charge your camera batteries and other electrical items before staying at the yurt camp, and that you carry spare batteries as well.
