Itinerary
Day 1
Evening arrival at our start hotel; a short 15 minute transfer from the airport.
Day 2
This morning we drive to Anjar in the Bekaa Valley (approx 1.5 hours). The town's population consists almost entirely of Armenians, with the Syrian army based here during the civil war. Here we visit the 8th century Umayyad site with its well-preserved remains - the great palace and column lined streets are a classic example of Umayyad architecture. We then continue onto Baalbeck (approx 1 hour) one of the most impressive Roman ruins in the Middle East. Built between 50-150 AD, its acropolis is one of the largest in the world and there are temples to Jupiter and Venus. On our return to Beirut we stop off at Ksara, home to the excellent wine-makers famous for using the Roman caves as natural wine cellars, where we can participate in some wine tasting. This evening why not wander down the charming Corniche in Beirut for a drink and meal.
Day 3
The day begins with a tour of Beirut to explore the city, a mix of old and new. We visit the reconstructed Solidere area with its renovated buildings and rediscovered archaeological sites and numerous churches and mosques. The authorities have decided to leave the Green Line, the dividing line between the hostile forces and so the focus of much of the carnage, in its current state. It is hoped that this avenue of wrecked buildings will act as a deterrent for any future conflict.
This afternoon we will visit the spectacular Jeita Grottos, a striking 9 km labyrinth of galleries on two levels. Please note on occasion some of the galleries will be closed (if there has been a lot of rain for example.) We continue along the Mediterranean coast to the charming town of Byblos now known as Jbeil (approx 1 hour). Inside the old town's crusader walls is an old fishing port and over 4000 years of history accumulated in various states of repair. It is believed by many to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. We take a guided tour of the Crusader castle built in the 12th century and discover the old town around the port, before spending the night here
Day 4
This morning is free to explore Byblos, where there are old markets where you can shop for souvenirs and antiques, or stroll along the old cobblestone streets and enjoy the Phoenician, Roman, Crusader and Mamluke architecture, or simply relax by the seaside.
This afternoon we head back to Beirut where the rest of the day is free for individual sightseeing or shopping. Beirut has always encouraged artistic creativity thanks to its diversity and open-mindedness. The city's cultural life is constantly expanding with regular concerts, festivals and exhibitions. Your tour leader will be able to advise on what is on offer.
Day 5
End Beirut.
