  • A WEEK IN JORDAN

An enjoyable week but probably as much time as you would ever need in Jordan to see the highlights - Petra, Gerash. Kerak, the Dead See and Wadi Rum. Aquaba is probably worth missing unless you enjoy the seaside. Amman seemed to have surprisingly little to offer other than the citadel and the Roman theatre.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Definitely Petra - truly a wonderful place but be prepared for large numbers of people in your photos and the ever present hawkers of cheap tat. Also the constant invitations to take a donkey or camel ride from a cast of characters from Pirates of the Carribean - most of whom are taking off Captain Jack Sparrow - pretty surreal.

Wadi Rum is also spectacular if you can ignore the presence of several hundred other people doing the same as you. Not a wilderness experience by any means but the scenery is magnificent - you would need to take a trip into the deeper desert to trully appreciate it. Not 3 miles from the visitor centre in a bespoke tourist camp.

What did you think of your group leader?

Very knowledgeable and supportive in putting things right with the hotels on the minor things like no hot water. One is never sure with group leaders whether they are personally benefiting from the ability to bring a largish group into a restaurant or shop - but if ours was doing that he covered it well.

He was also very helpful with some of the weaker walkers in the group, encouraging them on when necessary e.g. on the 'secret way' into Petra.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The Al Fanar hotel in Amman is about three miles from the city centre on a busy main road. There isn't much to do around the hotel although there is the equivalent of an off licence on the other side of the road. The visa cost into Jordan is now 20 dinar; expect a wait in the queue for immigration if the flight into Jordan is busy.

Driving in Jordan is more harum scarum than in the UK - lane discipline is not particularly well observed - maybe because they don't do lane markings!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
The bus used for transport was comfortable and air conditioned witha plentiful supply of bottled water on board.

This was a unforgettable holiday. I realy enjoyed visiting Jordan as I had never visited the Middle East before. Enjoyed the historical sites plus floating in the Dead Sea and sleeping out under the stars in Wadi Rum.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The highlight of the trip was Petra. There are no words that can explain it. The two climbs to Ed Deir ( Monastary) and Attuf Ridge ( The High Place of Sacrifice) was an amazing experience.

Second was sleeping under the stars with the Beduins in the Barrh camp in Siq Umm Tawaqi in Wadi Rum, after a camel ride earlier in the day, Lawrance of Arabia style!

What did you think of your group leader?
Our tour leader Saddam al King was a first class guide and made sure to include a couple of side trips that werent on the itinerary and really added to the trip.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Try the Turkish baths. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and drink lots of water! Make an effort to get on as a group as it can make all the difference to how much you enjoy your holiday.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I will be travelling again with Exodus!

I had a lovely break, saw the key sites in Jordan and had an informative guide.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The visit to Wadi Rum was very good, mostly because I had the chance to ride a camel for the first time - and a very pleasant experience it was too! The facilities at the site were OK, but would have preferred either very rudimentary or luxury, the Wadi Rum site is somewhere in between and doesn't quite hit the mark.

Petra was definitely my favourite site. It was great that we had two full days as you definitely need this to have any chance of exploring the massive and well preserved site.

What did you think of your group leader?
Khaled was very good, he mostly directed us to where we needed to be and then let us get on with the exploring. He was always approachable.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Wadi Rum - definitely bring your own sleeping bag. There are beds and bedding materials, but you'll sleep better with your own stuff. And don't forget your ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.

Alcohol - unsurprisingly not that common in Jordan, so if you really need a tipple with dinner bear this in mind as most restaurants don't serve it.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
A really great insight into the country, and though the tour is only 9 days you really do get to see the main sites. The Dead Sea was fun.. you are REALLY buoyant! Petra is AMAZING.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Jordan. April is a great time to go if you don't like it too hot.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Petra was as amazing as everyone says. We loved seeing all the stalls and the camels and donkeys, giving a flavour of what it must have been like when Petra was a trading place. Reading a newspaper in the Dead Sea. Wadi Rum, including the camel ride on the first afternoon. Snorkling at Aqaba just a short distance from the shore, seeing the public beach and then seeing a man ride his camel down the pavement. The church at Madaba.

What did you think of your group leader?

It may be that our group leader was not properly briefed. He didn't seem to know what was expected of him and didn't know that according to the trip notes we should have had a lesson is bread making and a morning camel ride. (Fortunately we had the opportunity the afternoon before). He did know a lot about the country though and gave some good insights.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Talk to your guide abouth the Jordanian view of society and acceptable behaviour (particulary of women). We found it added very much to our holiday.

May be difficult to use ATMs.  Take dollars or Jordanian Dinars (get them ordered on line before you go and collect at Heathrow)

What a great week ! The variety in each day is great - and whilst not overly energetic some days is made up on the others! We had beautiful days - sunshine but not too hot ! and no insects biting !

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Seeing Petra by night and then by day - there is soooo much to see - its a lot more than the treasury - but even that is fantastic and so 3 days is really needed to get the feel of the place.

Little Petra too well worth the visit  as had a different purpose.

And the dead sea and the red sea and Jerash for the roman ruins - its was all great !

What did you think of your group leader?
Our leader Khaled was great - his knowlwedge was excellent and he was very patient with all the questions and ignorance!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Had a great time - definately do the camping option - to sleep under the stars was a real highlight !

Also the dead sea  - get a mud bath - leaves the skni lovely and soft - but have an old swimsuit for this.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Dont expect alcohol - it can be bought but is very expensive - expect a dry week and its soo cheap not buying beer and wine with meals - the soft drinks are usually fresh squeezed juices and are lovely- the food was fab everyday !
