A wonderful trip to a fascinating and beautiful country with a wealth of history.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Hard to choose between the churches of Lalibela, the stunning scenery in the Simian Mts and the lakes in the south.
What did you think of your group leader?
Excellent, a very nice and very well informed man.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
You could leave out the Ethiopian wine and not miss much...  Generally the food was fine, particularly the fish, and the coffee was superb pretty well everywhere.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Definitely worth doing a bit of reading about the history before you go; Wikipedia is as good as anywhere. It really was an excellent trip.

Generally a very informative, interesting trip and fulfilled expectations of Ethiopia. In chronological order following suggestions -a group Ethiopian dinner at Ghion on first night ; optional boat trip at lake Tana to be included; full/extra day at Simien NP (altho' hotel at Debark terrible ,worst by far) free time on days 2,9 + 12 not really required; consider extn to Harar to be included and journey south to lakes to be optional ?Overall culture and security made it a lot more enjoyable than some other African countries.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
    The historical background and scenery
What did you think of your group leader?
Could not be faulted on knowledge and information .Administratively could have been a bit more decisive , (twice lost a member of group !) and organised food and drink and money stops
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
As usual bring pens etc to give away

Well organised, exactly as advertised in the trip notes.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Gebre took us to observe the rituals to mark the day of St Mary at the monolithic church of Lalibela. An inspiring morning.
What did you think of your group leader?
Gebre's enthusiasm never failed. Very knowledgeable on art, architecture, culture and history. He made extra efforts to give us unique experiences such as the early morning church rituals in Lalibela. He was very well organised on all logistics, and dealt will unexpected developments efficiently.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Rather than go to the south for the last two nights, I would have preferred an extra night at Lake Tana and and extra night in Gondar.

An intriguing country with a lot going for it. The holiday exceeded expectations.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Lalibela. The site is superb, and well worth spending two days there, and the mule trip up into the mountains was a perfect enhancement to it. The churches carved into the rock are spiritual, moving and interesting at once.
What did you think of your group leader?
Kibrom was a true professional throughout. He dealt with the few problems that arose efficiently and thoughtfully and responded to the groups requests for information thoroughly and carefully.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
The hotels are of a better standard than I expected. I brought a mossie net but didn't need it. I did get bitten around the ankles quite a lot so perhaps repellent socks would be a good idea! I think we travelled at a good time of year (November) after the rains so the country was green and lush.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
There's a bit of everything on this trip - ancient sites, scenery, and animals, but mainly it's about the sites. Such walking as there is is easygoing and gently paced. Thre is some rough travel - like it was in the olden days of adventure travel! - but it's generally accessible for all levels of fitness.

To get the most out of this trip, remember where you are. Ethiopia is in the 'top ten' of poorest countries on the planet. If there's no hot water, be grateful for running water at all. If you get fed up with kids in rags holding their hands out, notice their smiles instead. And if the food is a bit boring, at least there's plenty of it for tourists. If you are realistic about these things, you will have a trip that is never boring, and is full of amazing scenery, wonderful people, and interesting and unique buildings.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The mule ride/trek to a remote mountain-top monastery was definitely the highlight. Everyone seemed to enjoy getting out of the bus and on to '4 legs'; the views were breathtaking at every corner, and the monastery itself perched like an eyrie atop the mountain.

Another magical moment was at the end of the walk in the Simien Mountains. The walk itself was wonderful - picturesque Afro-Alpine scenery with dramatic views across valleys, and wild flowers everywhere. At the end of our walk it started to rain so there was little enthusiasm for the optional 20 minute 'add-on' to see a waterfall, especially having already visited the falls at Tississat. A few of us did it, and are we glad we did!  We climbed up over a steep rockface to suddenly see water tumbling over the sheer cliff opposite, falling to the valley 100s of feet below. With no sign of human habitation or development, we felt like 18th century explorers stumbling across this beautiful sight!

What did you think of your group leader?

Being on the Meskal Festival departure, our tour overlapped with the next one and our leader had to leave us 3 days before the end to accompany the next group. Gebre (the First) had been helpful, diplomatic and informative, and none of us wanted to lose him. Gebre (the Second) joined us in Addis and we need not have worried - he was very experienced, friendly and knowledgeable, and admitted that he enjoyed getting out of the office for while!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Keep your expectations realistic, and you will have a great trip with more than enough of those surprising, magical moments that make travel so addictive.

Travel light - there's lots of packing and unpacking, and laundry services are available often enough throughout the trip for just a few pennies.

Most people on our trip had stomach upsets, which mostly lasted less than 24hrs and were manageable with immodium. We stayed well but only ate food which had been well-cooked, such as soup and pasta. Use your hand-gel, and don't expect a gourmet experience.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Our trip was in September and I can recommend this as a fantastic time to visit Ethiopia. The rains have mostly finished, and the country is lush and green. Crops are everywhere, and the hillsides decorated with carpets of yellow meskel flowers. We went to the Meskel Festival - a parade of priests, dancers and bands, with music and chanting. It went on all afternoon and into the evening, when the crowds became a magical display of flaming torches. It ended with fireworks and the lighting of the traditional piton-shaped bonfire.

The only negative for me was that this trip often felt like an OAPs Coach Trip, rather than one of the "Adventure and Activity holidays" for which Exodus is famous. Our guide told us that even the mule trek was in danger of being 'dropped' on health and safety grounds. If that happens I feel there will be very little left on this trip that could be considered adventurous, and it is in danger of becoming a sedate bus tour, albeit in an extraordinary country. Our guide had to spend a disproportionate amount of time dealing with physical frailities; a group of 18 is too many for this tour to run smoothly.

The first couple of days were strange. We stayed in (reasonable) tourist hotels, but were therefore surrounded by European tourists all day - in hotel and at the placed we visited. I was not expecting that.

I had no idea what to expect and enjoyed the whole experience, it was great to go somewhere different. It was a great tour. History, culture, scenery & nature.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Simien mountains were great -Much higher than expected. Great hike. Great to see Baboons.

Lalibela during Lent, great to experience services. The mule hike was worthwhile, I walked the whole way which was exhausting but well worth it.

Visiting the local markets - wow.

What did you think of your group leader?
Gebre was very knowledgeable. He managed the group well. He knew all the history & the wildlife. He also shared life in Ethiopia. He added to the whole experience. Great Guide.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If you are Vegan try this. We went in Lent & there are fasting days, where we had a vegan buffet which has various spicy dishes, salads & pasta. It was easy to get vegan food in the Hotels, although we had pasta a few times. The fasting pizza is great - has no cheese on it. Expect not to have too much variety, but it was easier than expected. I enjoyed the food.

There are 2 days where you need a pack lunch, so worth taking some sandwich filling. We also took marmite for breakfest. We bought Lentil soup for lunch with fresh bread in the hotels.

The fruit smoothies are great. I think I had a nutritious diet on holiday.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

This was a great holiday with lots of variety. There is some travelling on dusty roads, but it is broken up with visits on the way. The views are great.

There was not a free day, but each day there was a couple of hours of free time around lunch time, which was nice to just chill & have time to yourself. Take it all in. Just be openminded.

If you fancy something different you'll enjoy this.

We went in March which is the end of the dry season, so was very yellow, dry & dusty. We were lucky that the dam was closed as the Nile falls were flowing.
