Frequently Asked Questions
About Your Trip
Is it worth doing the Balloon Safari?
Yes, without a doubt! Nothing can prepare you for the experience of floating over the Masai Mara and seeing the animals in action from above. It is very special, and well worth the early morning start.

Can I charge camera batteries during the trip?
The vehicle used on this trip has something called a 24/240 volt inverter on board. This allows camera, phone and even laptop batteries to be charged whilst the vehicle is moving (i.e. when the engine is running). There is limted space, with approx 4-6 sockets available, so not everyone can charge batteries at once!

What kind of food will we be having in East Africa?
The food is excellent. For breakfast, lots of fruit, cereals and toast. Salad, sandwiches and more fruit for lunch and a hot cooked dinner every evening. There is a complete variety of meals, from western fare to rice based dishes. Vegetarians are well catered for, just let us know before you travel!

Yes, all the tents have a mosquito proof net on the front which you should keep zipped up at all times to prevent any bugs getting in. However, I would also recommend taking a spray with you, which can be handy for ankles, arms and neck.

Is there a lot of driving through East Africa?
To pack so much into a short time, there are some long drives and although the distances are not great, some of the roads are quite poor and bumpy especially after the rainy seasons. We include breaks for toilet facilities, shopping, photos and meals as much as possible, so you can strech your legs at various times during the day. The spectacular scenery and glimpses of village life when travelling make the journeys more enjoyable but come prepared with a sense of adventure (and humour) for a holiday of a lifetime!

What is the best way to take money for AYK?
It's best to bring either GBP or USD in cash. There is not need to change money beforehand; you can change it when you arrive in Kenya and Tanzania.
In Kenya, change £50 at Nairobi airport. That should cover drinks, snacks and souvenirs. In Tanzania, you can change money in Musoma, Arusha, Dar, and Stone Town. There are also ATM's in these towns but I wouldn't recommend using them.
About £100-130.00 should cover drinks, gifts and snacks whilst in Tanzania, including lunches and dinners on Zanzibar.
I would suggest to bring some US dollars for visas and leader/cook/driver tips. I spent about $160.00 in total on these.

Do I need a Yellow Fever certificate?
Yes, ALL visitors (not just previously designated countries) to Zanzibar will be required to present a valid yellow fever certificate of vaccination on port of entry. You are advised to ensure that you have a valid vaccination certificate before travel.

What are the campsites on AYK like?
Facilities are simple but clean, although you should expect some long drop toilets. There are both separate ladies & gents and unisex showers and toilets but these always have locks on the doors. A couple of campsites have cold water only but you will always be off to another campsite so you can have a hot shower the following day.
For clothes washing – you will need to use a sink in a bathroom. Most campsites have bars, selling soft drinks, tasty local beers and western spirits. It is all very cheap. Also some campsites are busier than others so I recommend you to bring some earplugs!
Finally, be prepared for early mornings. On most days, you will be getting up at 5am, 6am or 7.30 am. You will also need to put your tent down before the breakfast – most of the time it will be still dark so don’t forget your head torch!

Is there any charity or project we can visit on the way?
You will spend one night at Meserani Snake Park on Day 8 of the itinerary. This park is run by a lovely South African lady called Ma and her husband. Ma has got the biggest, giving heart and will give you the warmest hug in the world! With the money she earns in the campsite and from clients’ donations, she is able to support the surrounding Masai communities.
She set up a medical clinic which is always in need for bandages – they treat thousands of snake bites a year. Also they have a few orphans and schools in the area who will appreciate colouring books, pens, pencils, crayons, toothbrushes, toothpaste and anything else you can spare. Feel free to visit Ma’s website http://www.meseranisnakepark.com/snake-park-medical-clinic.html and you can also email her before you go, to check if there is anything else she needs: snakepark@habari.co.tz.

What's the best way to take money to Kenya?
Just taking Sterling cash will be fine, and there is no need to change in US dollars. The local currency is the Kenyan Schilling, and you will be changing your money into this and spending with schillings only. Some services will accept dollars as payment, but it is not legal tender. It is best to change money at the airport in Nairobi and ATM machines are availabile there as well. Credit Cards are accepted at most points on the trips if you get stuck as well!

What kind of clothing is best?
Lightweight clothing for the day time, as the sun can be quite strong. Bring warmer layers for the cooler evenings and early mornings, when temperatures can drop surprisingly due to the altitude a lot of Kenya sits at.

How should I take my money for Tanzania?
US dollars cash is best, and this is changed into the local currency, the Shilling. We price most activities in our trip notes in dollars, simply to make it easier to calculate costs but you will not be spending dollars directly.
Certain optional activities may be possible to pay in dollars but please note that dollars are not legal tender in Tanzania. There are some ATMs in Arusha and Stonetown, but money is best changed upon arrival at Kilimanjaro airport.
