A solid introduction to Tunisia. You get to see a lot of what the country has to offer - Roman ruins, the star wars sets, the rugged desert and fertile plains of the north. Tour would have warranted 4 or 5 stars had it not been for lax safety standards at one of the hotels - they didn't block my single room and gave it to three men who came in while I was sleeping! The company has not responded to my feedback as yet - would be very disappointing if not addressed.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Seeing the carthage of legend - although mostly in ruin you can imagine how grand it must have been Meeting fellow adventurous travellers!
What did you think of your group leader?
Soldiered on despite a bad flu. VeRy even tetempered and professional.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Be prepared for a positively frigid night in the desert and bring a subzero sleeping bag. Bring meds as temperature fluctuations are quite extreme and it's easy to fall sick.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Dinners at the hotels were v average. Perhaps the choice of inclusion of dinner was one of expediency but would not have minded hunting own dinner and reducing upfront tour cost in process.

    Exodus Response

We were very sorry to learn about the incident that occurred at the Hotel National in Tunis and have already sent an apology letter to Ms Su Chen. We understand that regrettably the receptionist at the hotel made a mistake by inadvertently issuing three male clients with an electronic key card for the room that had already been allocated to this client. The receptionist has assured us that this was a case of human error and is genuinely sorry for any alarm caused by the mistake. We have worked with the Hotel National for several years and have never previously heard of this type of situation occurring before, but we have raised this matter seriously with the manager of the hotel and do believe this was a one off mistake which we trust will not occur again.

Great trip, great guide with a plethora of different experiences.  These varied from the Tunis medina to a night in the desert to a four wheel drive trip through the dunes of the hahara.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
So many but the night in the desert, the afternoon at the International festival of the Sahara at Douz and the four wheel drive in the desert followed by a spectacular sunset, stand out.
What did you think of your group leader?
Amine was suberb, friendly, knowledgeable with everything exceptionally well planned.  The best guide I've travelled with for a long time.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If you go at this time of year (Decemeber) don't expect it to be hot.  We had showers the first day in Tunis followed by generally sunny days.  Temperatures were cold in the early morning and evening, mild to warm (14-18c) for the rest ofthe day.  The night in the desert was very chilly especiaslly for those of the group (not me) who decided to sleep ou under the stars.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Everyone found having to take a sleeping bag for just one night a drag.  It compromised what else we could take especially as we needed to cater for quite a range of temperatures.  More blankets or sleeping bags provided please.

    An excellent introduction to Tunisia

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Camel ride and camping in the desert. Ancient monuments were really awsome
What did you think of your group leader?
    Very good indeed
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We were disappointed that the Red Lizard train ride was replaced by the 'exciting' 4-wheel drive. Especially as the Red Lizard train WAS running. The 4-wheel drive trip substituted was far from exciting, was almost entirely on public roads, and could have been easily completed in any family car.

This whistle-stop tour of Tunisia encompasses three UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Tunis Medina, Kairouan and Dougga as well as fabulous ruins at Carthage, El Djem and Sbeitla. Its a good value for money trip packed with variety including camel riding in the Sahara, Berber villages near the Algerian boarder and many other delights.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The three Berber villages of Chebika, Mides and Tamerza plus Douz.

The extraordinary ruins at Dougga and the first class guide who had two archaeology degrees!

What did you think of your group leader?

Amine felt like one of us yet was a proud ambassador for his country. He combined depth of knowledge with reliable courtesy and a terrific sense of humour. He was always friendly and made us feel in safe hands while show casing a vastly different culture. He's a competent leader who easily coped with all our different personalities and needs. It was appreciated that he was flexible and allowed us to opt out of the group meals if we wanted.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be prepared for long stretches on the road. Some of the loos are basic and lacking in loo paper.

Its worth pointing out that if you plan on doing last minute shopping in the Medina in Tunis it closes at midday on Sundays.

Also the famous Bardo Museum in Tunis is only partly open as major refurbishments are taking place.

The casba at Le Kef was closed due to a strike by the workers who wanted permanent contracts.

Be very careful expressing any interest in carpets - its not true when they say there is no obligation to buy!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Tunisia appears to be a well ordered clean country with standards of behaviour.

Being a Muslim country I wasnt surprised as a woman to be served last after any men in fast food joints.

The Tunisians were friendly and smiled readily and responded to basic French. It seemed a tolerant country.

The only negative experience I had was to do with carpets.

Well-planned and very interesting with an excellent guide, spoilt only by a depressing, dismal hotel in Tunis - I would have paid more for a better hotel there.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Many of the sights inspired me as possible subjects for paintings.
What did you think of your group leader?
Excellent. Could not have been more thoughtful or accommodating.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Be prepared for lots and lots of cous-cous.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Just provide a better hotel in  Tunis.

Overall I had a fantastic time and the trip provided a great way to get an overview of the country.  The Roman ruins at El Djem, Sbeitla and Dougga are breathtaking and the camel trek and camp is really fun.  Main dissapointment was the 'Star Wars' set.  No context as to what we were visiting and compared to the Trogladyte home we visited before which was amazing, the 'Star Wars' part was quite a let down.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
It is hard to pick anything above Dougga as it was so breathtaking.  It is almost impossible to convey in words how much I enjoyed the Roman ruins visited and Dougga was the highlight of them all.  A truly memorable and moving experience.
What did you think of your group leader?

Ahmeen was great.  He was friendly, approachable and incredibly well informed.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Don't expect much free time as it is a packed itinerary.

There is not really any oppurtunity for exploration in the evenings to local restaurants etc as the evening meals are provided at the hotels where you stay so this can feel a little restrictive.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I had a really enjoyable trip and if you are looking to get a really good overview of the country this is a very good trip for you to take.  There is a nice mix of different sights to see and the diversity of the country from Tunis to the Sahara is captured about as well as it could be given the length of the trip and the distance covered.
