A real adventure with a great group on a well equipped truck that allows you to get off the beaten track and camp in some amazing places!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Very difficult to pick just one from such an action packed trip, so going for three...

On a night drive in South Luangwa , being the only vehicle privileged to witness a stunning male leopard drinking from a waterhole with hyenas one side and elephants the other....

I am not sure I would call this inspirational, but I will never forget whilst on a boat on the Shire river in Liwonde National Park watching two waterbuck fighting on the river's edge and then witnessing  the brutal demise of one as it is taken by a crocodile and literally wrestled with.

Simply just sitting outside the tent in South Luangwa literally metres from the river watching  hippos literally sliding down the banks as the rains began and elephants grazing at very close quarters!

What did you think of your group leader?
Linda was very capable and everthing you would expect in a leader. She worked very hard to ensure things ran as smoothly as possible, particularly when the truck got stuck in mud and lots of rain made for a big change of plan at the end. Linda coped with it all admirably and calmly and instilled complete faith in the group.  She was  assisted by a great driver /camp assistant  Lams and a really wonderful cook, Ed. They made a great team.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Just do it! Take pens, pencils notebooks etc which the leader will distribute at schools or at the Mission.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I  thoroughly enjoyed the trip which no doubt was enhanced by the camping element. To wake up and look out of your tent as sun rises over the Luangwa river or Senga Bay is very special.

Tour leader, driver and cook were great, excellent food and 13 was a great number, not too many. Luawa Forest and Zomba plateau need more investigation, some of the advertised activities were not available or possible in the time and there are apparently better areas of Zomba to explore.  Otherwise a great trip, Zambia was a great way to complete the trip.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The Community nurse at Kande Health centre does an amazing job, I felt quite choked after talking to her.

What did you think of your group leader?
Pleasant , cheerful, always on time: good communication skills, looked after everyone, brought the group together. I travelled alone but always felt supported and part of the group. Was not always familiar with the sites, but did tell us that. Perhaps need the opportunity to visit the sites that you use.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
I shall take a short kaftan for visiting showers, often difficult to clamber in and out of trousers and not always anywhere to keep things dry.  Tents are very good but heavy if you are alone, needs help. The truck is great, but keep your luggage light, extra mattresses are available.  Head torch essential, goes dark early.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The Wildlife park is amazing and the campsite is great, right by the river, hippos come up at night and wander through, as do elephants in the day. The fixed tents are real luxury with the outdoor en suite.

A few very long truck days but this didn't detract from the holiday. Was a great mixture of Game viewing (South Luangwa, Chobe), relaxation (Zanzibar), people (Malawi) and activity (Kande Beach and Livingstone).

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Really enjoyed the white water rafting in Livingstone, the whole of South Luangwa and the village visit in Malawi. Would not have had chance to experience these fully, however, if it wasn't for our guide who rearranged the itinery so we could spend two days in Livingstone and an extra day in Kande Beach. Think the itinery could do with a little tweaking here and there to make the most of these features.
What did you think of your group leader?
Our group leader was great and worked endlessly to make our trip more enjoyable. Our cook batchi was fantastic: the meals were great (we all put on weight) and our camp assistant lawrence was endlessly helpful too. Not having to put up and take down the tents or help with chores (like you used to have to with exodus) makes such a difference to the holiday!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Do the full day rafting in Livingstone rather than half day. The descent down into the gorge is awful (on the half day only) and the whole rafting thing is great! Do the village visit in kande and take some stuff for the school and the health centre that you visit (we didn't realise that this was a feature of the visit) pens, crayons, books, exercise books or money donations.

    Exodus Response

Hi Katie, thanks for reviewing you recent trip!

We are amending the itinerary for our AZA 2009 trips. In 2009 we will focus specifically on Malawi and South Luangwa. Malawi and Zambia were real highlights of the previous itinerary and in 2009 we spend more time with the amazing people of Malawi, relax at Kande Beach and discover the wonderful wildlife of South Luangwa.
