Frequently Asked Questions
About Your Trip
Can I charge camera batteries on trip?
Unfortunately it is impossible to charge batteries for cameras, phones or any other electrical equipment during the main section of this trip. You will be able to charge batteries at camp on the last night before your return home.
It is strongly recommended that you bring sufficient batteries for all equipment for the duration of the trip.

Do I need previous canoeing experience?
It’s not necessary to have canoed before. Your guide will give you some instruction but no technical skills are required as the water in the lower Zambezi is generally quite slow flowing and flat. If you are a complete novice you may like to sit in the front where all you have to do is paddle. The person in the back of the canoe is responsible for steering and paddling.

How fit do I have to be to canoe on the Zambezi?
Anyone who is reasonably fit and healthy should be able to do this trip without too much difficultly. There are opportunities to rest during the day. There is sometimes a strong headwind which can make the water a little choppy and the going a little tougher.

Is drinking water available while canoeing?
The leader carries a large water tank which is filled from the river each day and purified. At the beginning of the trip, the water may even be chilled! You need to bring a water bottle and top it up with water from the tank as required. Make sure you drink plenty during the day so that you don’t get dehydrated.

Are there are opportunities to help local people on this trip?
Towards the end of the trip we include visits to a remote rural village and a school in another village. In the first village there is the opportunity to meet some of the villagers, find out a bit about their daily lives and purchase a few handicrafts. In the second village we visit Muguarameno primary school, which has a high percentage of orphans amongst its pupils and no means of funding. Donations of children’s clothes, children’s reading books in English (suitable for 3-7 year olds), educational toys, pens, pencils, exercise books etc are most welcome. Please bring whatever you can.

How big are the tents and do we need mozzie nets?
They are large dome 2 man tents. You should be able to stand up in them and the dimensions are approximately 2.4 x 2.4 x 1.8 meter. All the tents have mesh windows and doors so mosquito nets are not needed. Obviously you should keep your tent closed when not in it, to prevent bugs flying in!

Is a sleeping mat necessary for this trip?
Yes, but one is provided for you as part of the trip. It will be a 1 inch styro-foam sleeping mat.

What are the campsites like on the Zambezi?
While on the Zambezi we camp on large islands in the river. The ground is generally flat with some vegetation. There are no washing facilities so we recommend you bring along a supply of wetwipes. Loo facilities consist of finding a strategic place behind a nearby bush or tree! You cannot go near to the water’s edge at night in case there are any crocodiles lurking below the water. However, during the day it is often possible for the leader to find a shallow spot in the river where it is safe to have a cooling dip and a bit of a wash.

Can I get my Zambian visa locally?
Yes, if you are a British passport holder, it is quite easy to get upon arrival. The cost is $50USD for a single entry visa (or the equivalent in GBP). If you do not hold a British passport, please check with the nearest embassy, or Exodus and we may be able to help.
