Frequently Asked Questions
About Your Trip
What will the weather be like in South Africa?
Summer months in South Africa are from October to April and the average daytime temperature is 25 to 30ºC. The average night time temperature is 10 to 20ºC, so pretty mild. The winter months are from May to September and average temperatures are about 10ºC colder at this time of year. The summer months are typically dry and warm, but the South Easterly wind can blow up to 70km/h at least a few times a month. This helps to cool things off, but can be a little unpleasant if one is walking in exposed areas. Most of the rainfall is in the winter but it is frontal rain, which comes off the Atlantic. Therefore it can rain solidly for 2 days, and in between there will be warm sunny days! Due to the ocean’s proximity to the mountains and the winds, it is fairly common to experience tabletop clouds on the higher mountains.

Do I need to book the trip to Robben island in advance?
We strongly advise booking in advance to avoid disappointment as this excursion is very popular. If you would like to book this excursion, then please advise the Exodus office at least 4 weeks before travel. The tickets will then be payable locally – this is to avoid disappointment as it is a popular tour. Once you have signed up then we cannot accept cancellations. Refunds will only be issued if we are refunded by the ticket office for adverse weather conditions etc.

How do I get the visa for Mozambique?
All visitors require a visa for Mozambique. This can be obtained at the Mozambican border for approx R200 per person however the Foreign Office have advised that there have been some reports of long delays and local authorities running out of visas. We therefore now recommend that you obtain a visa prior to departure. The visa fee is £40 and you will need 1 form and 2 photographs. The address of the Mozambique High Commission is 21 Fitzroy Square, London W1P 5HJ, Tel 0207 383 3800 and is open between 0930 and 1300 Mon to Fri. The website is www.mozambiquehc.org.uk. For exact details of how to obtain your visa in other countries, please check with your local embassy.

Any tips for local food or restuarants in South Africa?
You should definitely try ostrich Sausages with traditional 'Pap' (Maize & water), as well as snoek fish cakes and the 'sexy' bread in Napier!
Some nice places to try this might be the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay or the Sea Forth Fish Restaurant, Boulders Beach.
