Frequently Asked Questions
About Your Trip
How basic is accommodation in the village?
The group will be dispersed to various families with a maximum of 2 clients per hut. As you would expect, the huts are very basic. Sleeping bags and mats will be provided by the local operator if you so desire (feel free to bring your own). You are advised also to bring a mosquito net which you may wish to donate to your family. Washing and toilet facilities will be outside and basic.

Should I bring anything to donate locally?
Old clothes are recommended for your village stay which you can leave behind as any old clothes are gratefully received. For the school in Chikumbi bringing pens, books (adult and children's), notebooks, vitamin pills, first aid supplies, educational and sporting supplies and kit etc for donations will be of great assistance.

How is food arranged when staying in the village?
In Chikumbi your food will be provided by your local family. This will based around basic maize based porridge so you may want to bring some snacks to compensate for this. We will stop at a supermarket in Lusaka en route from the airport. A small donation will need to be made to the family locally for food whilst staying in the village (I will advise on how much to give.)
Please inform us of any special dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian or allergies), however your family will be fairly limited in their options.

What actual work will I be doing while volunteering?
This will very much depend on your own skills, as there are a variety of things you can help out with. You could be helping out teaching English or sports at the school, or helping in the continued improvements or renovation to the school buildings. There is plenty of work to do, the exact nature of which will be decided on arrival. If you chose not to work there is no problem at all with this as you can just spend the day enjoying the community and its people. There will be plenty of time for interacting with the school children.
