About Your Trip
Tips from staff who have done the Highlights of Botswana
The two nights in the delta
You need a bag for the two nights in the Delta on the Mokoros. A large day pack would be fine, as would a large stuff sack - even a bin bag ! The leader recommends that clients take enough clothes for the 2 nights in their day bag with them into the delta - they do provide thick plastic bin bags as well to waterproof your clothes.
They will drop off the rest of your luggage with their operations manager and he locks it up in their store room.
General
I didn't miss anything, but some key things to take that you might not think to :
- Pillow for the camp beds
- spare head-torch (mine broke)
- a book / ipod (for some of the long journeys)
I went in October and over-packed on warm clothes. (October is the hottest month) . Also, dont forget to use the Universal Packing List attached to your Final Joining Instructions, it serves as a good reminder.
I noticed in the trip notes that they don't mention taking a swimming costume, which I would definitely recommend (if you like to swim) as there will be safe areas to take a dip (well away from crocs and hippos!).
Tipping
We recommend for the leader between approximately £2 and £3 per person per day. Also, the camp assistant and luggage driver are with the group for 10 days - I gave £1 a day for each, which was £10 each for the duration of the trip. Some people in our group thought this was a bit much and gave about 50 Pula (about £5) per assistant per trip. It is entirely your own choice but I thought the guys did a great job, and were so friendly.
Water
You don't need to take water treatment tablets, as a lot of the water along the way is drinkable and there are loads of places to buy water as you travel as well.
Money
Across the road from the airport there are bureau de changes - there is also one inside the bush telegraph shop that we use a lot.
Free time in Maun
If you have any spare time in Maun, I would recommend the flight over the delta - best in the mornings - the guide can help you with bookings. There are also a few good curio shops in town. Besides that, the lodge has a wonderful pool!
Laundry
The camp lodge in Maun and Livingstone can do laundry through their facilities which you pay for per item. There are no laundromats with machines for clients to do their own washing, but you can hand wash clothes at all the main campsites in Maun, Kasane and Livingstone.
Mike James - Operations Director
How much should I budget for optional excursions in southern Africa?
There are lots of extra things to see and do during the trip and the best way to calculate amounts is to check in the detailed trip notes, where they give as close an estimate as possible to what you may need along the way. Obviously some people will want to do more than others and will have to budget accordingly.
Jim Eite - Product Manager
How big are the tents and do we need mozzie nets?
They are large dome 2 man tents. You should be able to stand up in them and the dimensions are approximately 2.4 x 2.4 x 1.8 meter. All the tents have mesh windows and doors so mosquito nets are not needed. Obviously you should keep your tent closed when not in it, to prevent bugs flying in!

Are there washing facilities on this trip?
In both Maun and Livingstone you will have a chance to wash some clothes, but nowhere else.
Brendan Phelan - Customer Operations
Are camp beds provided on this trip?
Yes, comfortable camp beds are provided so it's not necessary to take sleeping mats as well.
Sarah Ahern - Product Manager
Can I charge equipment while in Botswana?
Yes, the truck has an inverter which allows charging (bear in mind others may want to do so at the same time!) but you should also get a chance at the campsites in Maun, Livingstone and Kasane.

Can the optional activities at Vic Falls be paid by credit card?

Can I get my Zambian visa locally?
Yes, if you are a British passport holder, it is quite easy to get upon arrival. The cost is $50USD for a single entry visa (or the equivalent in GBP). If you do not hold a British passport, please check with the nearest embassy, or Exodus and we may be able to help.
