This was the first group holiday I'd been on and I was a little apprehensive but I have only had good things to say about it since I've been back. The activities are well organised and there is a good variety, so should be something for everyone.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I've been asked this a number of times since I came home and found it hard to answer - you have so many varied experiences during the 3 weeks but I do always come back to Victoria Falls, particularly flying over them and through the gorge in a helicopter - you really can't get a feel for the sheer size of the falls when you are walking around them.

What did you think of your group leader?

Couldn't have asked for better guides than Emma and Alfred. They were full of knowledge about the countries we visited and did everything they could to make sure we were all looked after. They were also great cooks - making sure we had a good variety of food.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be prepared for some long days driving but searching for animals during those days will keep you busy and distracted!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

    Just go for it! :-)

Having planned this trip for 10 years, I had high expectations of what Southern Africa had to offer; this trip blew those expectations out of the water. Any concerns about camping & amenities were soon forgotten and the 3 weeks were filled with comfortable travelling, beautiful vibrant colours and tranquillity.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
There are so many highlights to this trip - but getting up before dawn to climb dune 45 was something I'd dreamed of doing and will remember always - witnessing the changing colours as the sun rises and the sudden increase in temperature was phenomenal, but my favourite memory is the few stolen moments when I was the last one on the dune rim and it was so quiet. A truly fantastic morning.
What did you think of your group leader?
Emma and Alfred were great. They spent time getting to know us and going above and beyond to ensure we were happy and comfortable. Alfred is a great cook & provided a varied and tasty menu for the vegetarian member of our group. Both were informative and insightful about the places we visited and the animals and plants we saw.

When they say pack and then take half out, do it! I travelled with 18kg and brought half of it home unworn.

While you need a relatively small amount of money while on the trip, consider extra trips and don't scrimp. For me this was the trip of a lifetime & the added extras - sand boarding, Vic falls by helicopter & sunset cruise at end really made this an unforgettable experience.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I can't think of any criticism - our guides were fantastic and we were lucky to have a nice group of travellers who all got along. We were well fed and saw/did everything covered in the trip notes and more.

I take memories from this trip that aren't advertised in the brochure - elephants at night along the dry river bed next to camp, giraffes (my favourite) as soon as we entered Etosha, building a human pyramid with new friends and watching Alfred learn to pole dance.

This was the first time I had travelled with Exodus. I chose an arranged trip like this as I am not very confident to 'go with the flow' whilst abroad. Booking couldn't have been easier and flights were well timed. Hotel accommodation was basic but adequate and camping was a great experience. The tour bus was spacious and comfortable (important as some days spend 8 hrs on it). Compared to other similar operators good value for money as very little additional spending money was needed.

Absolutely amazing 3 weeks - saw so much wildlife, (birds and animals), amazing scenery. Our guides (Shane and Gekko) looked after us brilliantly! Also fitted in some great adventures whilst there - sand boarding & surfing in Swakopmund and microlight over Victoria Falls. Loved our trip!

We saw a rhino seeing off some lions... we saw a rainbow round the sun... we were the only ones at the Deadvlei, which is an amazing place. Then the sand surfing down dunes at about 45mph - not for everyone but we loved it! The steam train in Livingstone - pure luxury!

What did you think of your group leader?

Shane our group leader was brilliant - and Gekko our driver and cook! Lovely meals! Shane was our lucky mascot and we saw a Steenbok which I'm sure many people would not have spotted and a leopard sitting under a tree.

If you have a reward programme, then we highly reccomend that both Shane & Gekko are put forward for their service, attitude, knowledge & sheer entertaiment.

We took RAND for the whole trip - you can use these everywhere. Depending on what you want to do you may need more than you bargain for as there is so much to do - especially at the Victoria Falls - if you can, book the trip to walk across Livingstone Island and jump into the Devil's pool right on the edge of the falls!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
This trip does have long days travelling but there is such contrasting scenery to look at and a stop for lunch...etc it wasn't a problem at all. Some of the roads are bumpy and opening shutting the windows when a car goes past to stop the dust coming in didn't spoil it - it added to our fun! Go for this trip - it's amazing!!

Excellent trip, a really good comination of both wildlife and some stunning scenery and amazing places to zisit along with friendly people and a variety of activites - There are a lot of early mornings and long travelling days but there are well broken up for the most part with plenty of 2 night stop overs and regular breaks on the road for photos, drinks, shops, lunch and bathroom breaks!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Riding the cable car to the top of table mountain and being lucky to have clear stunning views of Cape Town from the top.... the vastness of seeing the Etosha salt pan as far as the eye can see... watching a warthog run right through a pride of lions and manage to escape... riding the biggest elephant I have ever seen... canoeing and swimming in the orange river... Seeing the big 5, would have been amazing to have spotted a Cheetah to but maybe next time... Fish River Canyon at sunset.... Watching 30+ elephants drinking at a water hole just metres away... And much more!
What did you think of your group leader?
Shane was the group leader and as his favorite saying goes, "In Africa - anything is possible!"  And he was right!  Shane was friendly, funny and made everyone feel relaxed and at home from the very beginning - Gecko and Happy (The cook and driver) were also very easy going, friendly and hard working guys and we all got on well and appreciated the hard work they did looking after the group and the regular entertainment and banter!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

I did the reverse itinerary and it was nice to end the trip in a hotel as it made prepering bags etc a lot easier and more comfortable than I imagine it would have been doing it in a tent.

A number of the excursions are quite expensive, so be prepared to spend quite a bit of money in Zambia and Swakopmund if you want to do some of the activities... also try to confirm there are enough people booked on your activity (especially scenic flights, skydiving etc) for it to take place as a few people were let down in Swakopmund with last minute cancellations and long delays for this reason.

There is a laundry service in Swakupmund and in Cape Town - and all of the lodges have areas for hand washing clothes and they dry very quickly!  You stop off at plenty of supermarkets and shops throughout the trip so easy to get any bits and pieces you forget or need to replace etc.

Depending on what time of year you go (We did Oct\Nov) be prepared for very hot and humid heat expecially in Zambia, Botswana and Namibia (except Swokopmund which was a lot cooler) - the heat extends to the shade (35'c in the shade a number of times in the trip) and through the night as well and I think I only used my sleeping back a couple of times the whole trip!  The mosquitos were only really a problem in Zambia and Botswana and we hardly saw any after that, although there were a few.

Most "universal" plug convertors dont have a SA fitting so make sure you get one at the airport (3 thick round pins), SA Rands are the easiest currency to take as every country you visit accepts them.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
This is a very well balanced trip with lots of variety and I really enjoyed it - lots of heat, lots of dust, lots of mosquitos in places and lots of early mornings and long days - but well worth it all for the animals, scenery, people and overall experience!

An enormous amount of travelling, be prepared for some very very long drives and plenty of them.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The sand dunes in Namibia and the wildlife in Botswana
What did you think of your group leader?
Ronnie our leader, he was very good  along with his two buddies, Happy and Freddy.  The food they turned out was excellent as we have always found on other truck trips with Exodus
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If you are planning this trip go a few days beforehand so you can have more time in Cape Town, it's a fantastic city with so much to see and do.
Is there anything else you would like to add?

I was expecting the big orange truck that we had been on, on  previous trips.  If I had read all the small print I would of known that Exodus do put this trip out to other companies.  No complaints though as the smaller truck was fine.

I realised that it was a very, very long trip but although Namibia is a beautiful country the scenery is very much the same, desert, desert, desert.

Botswana excelled my expectations, the wildlife was amazing.

If it is the Falls that is your main reason for going, do check out the time of the year.  We went in October and the Falls were more or less dry.  Several people   had said they had never seen it like that before, I think the reason being was, it was the end of the dry season and some of the water maybe dammed further up.  Whenevr you go though, take the helicopter trip over as you really do get to see the geographu of it better.  Being dry actually gave a better perspective as there was no spray  to cloud the view.

Overall it was an amazing trip and if you are thinking about it, do it !

This was a fantastic introduction to Southern Africa, we travelled on the reverse itinerary from Victoria Falls to Cape Town and on reflection I am glad we went that way.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The most inspirational part of the trip was walking with lions in Zambia, but there were highlights all along the way
What did you think of your group leader?
Our group leader Shane was good natured and very knowledgeable about wildlife (we tested him with obscure birds from time to time!), everything happened on time and as planned.  He had two very able assistants Gecko the driver and Tuafeni the cook.   The team were great and played a huge part in our enjoyment of the trip.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Nights can be cold, you need a good sleeping bag if you're camping

Don't be worried about camping, the campsites have good facilities (although not always hot showers!).  Many have swimming pools

Although the journey distance is long there was more time  for relaxing than I had expected

We took sterling cash to change at banks, (this could be a lengthy process). There were plenty of ATMs and any cash would probably have been better in SA Rand

Is there anything else you would like to add?
This was a great introduction to Africa,  I will treasure the memories

A rewarding trip with lots to see. Great animal opportunities but also great scenery.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
    • Walking with lions in Botswana, a surreal experience
    • Helicopter flight over Victoria Falls - until then you don't appreciate how enormous the Falls really are
    • Sitting round the campfire drinking red wine and taking in the amazing stars
What did you think of your group leader?
Ewald was very efficient and struck the right balance between business-like and friendly. He worked hard to accomodate all our individual needs and he showed great patience. Gecko was also great company and will make an excellent leader one day.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
    • If you don't like long drives, dust, sand, cold nights (in our Summer) this trip isn't for you
    • The local village in Botswana has a kindergarten (we were told it was a Primary school) so you may wish to take suitable donations. One of our group took balloons which the kids really enjoyed
    • Take US$ for Zambia and Botswana and SA Rand for Namibia and S.A.. There were cash machines every few days but it was more difficult finding banks open and with few queues. Shopping stops can be quite quick so taking £ to change was not ideal.
