We really wanted a cross country skiing holiday in Ramsau, but it is no longer offered. So we took our own skis, and only went snow shoeing on two days. They were enjoyable days in splendid scenery.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Snow shoeing high up on a ridge above Schladming on a beautiful day, with uninterrupted views of distant mountains, and a flock of hot air balloons taking off in the distance.
What did you think of your group leader?
Confident and experienced, and a pleasant group member.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The flights we were on meant that you could have breakfast at Gatwick, but that the next meal would be in the evening at the hotel, some 12 hours later. So buy a sandwich or something to keep you going. The big downside is that you fly with ThompsonFly - who use the minimum UK seat pitch of 28 inches in order to cram in more passengers, leaving less than 9 inches between the front of your seat squab and the back of the seat in front: you really are treated as Self Loading Freight.

Be prepared too for huge queues on the return at Salzburg Airport - the airport can not be bothered to employ enough security staff. When we returned the queue for security stretched right around the hall and through most of the check in lines - chaos, and over an hour and a half standing in various queues.

The hotel is good: clean, modern and comfortable rooms; pleasant staff, reasonable food, free wifi. BUT...the trip notes says it takes credit cards for your bar bill, whereas it doesn't except under exceptional circumstances. They really don't like cards: they even offered to drive us to a cash machine as we didn't have enough spare cash to pay with! In the end we settled the problem by using a debit card.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

A very good base for a winter activities holiday - lots of prepared tracks for walking and cross country skiing, as well as extensive areas for snow shoeing.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
each exodus trip i have been on has challenged me in some way and again the physical exercise on this trip did push me, being a moderate to challenging level, but the hard work is all totally worth the amazing views you get after climbing up high in the mountains.  you get to view scenery that you would never see otherwise.
What did you think of your group leader?
alex was overall an excellent leader who led our snowshoe walks brilliantly, taking us to lovely mountain huts, judging the groups ability well, and helping and understanding those first time snowshoers who needed a little more assistance, giving us a wonderful holiday and went out of his way in his own time to show us slideshows of other trips.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
it is a shame that this trip seems to be less popular than other winter trips with fewer people booking it, people are missing out on a lovely holiday :)

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The views from the top of Dachstein (2996m) were amazing.
What did you think of your group leader?
Emma was the best leader I've had.  I've done 8 Exodus trips, all having quite good leaders but Emma gave over and above what was expected or required.  She is highly skilled, very friendly and read the group very well.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
My favourite inspirational moment was the walk on the Thursday when the weather was sunny and clear.  We took a ski lift and walked to the summit of one of the mountains where we were treated to  360 degree panoramic views. and gre  We then walked along the plateau.  It was a really wonderful walk and great day.  There were also lots to do on your day off.  We had a horse and sleigh ride where the crazy driver plied us with schnapps whizzed through the snowy trails and took us to lunch in a mountain hut serving the local dish of kaisersmarmen set alight with rum.  It was a very entertaining day.  You could also go skiing, cross country skiing, various walks, sledging or take a trip to Salzburg.
What did you think of your group leader?
Our leader was Emma who was excellent. She had researched all the walks and pitched them just right at moderate and challenging.  She was very competent and a great leader, she made you feel safe and at ease.  She was also a really nice person to spend time with.  I would love to do another trip with her.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Prepare for all weathers and take lots of layers.  Diet before hand as the food is excellent and plentiful!
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Thomas and Anna ran the excellent hotel.  They could not do enough for you and had lots of useful local knowledge.  We had 5 course dinners with choice of main course which we chose in the morning.  Everyone was excellent and could not be faulted.  The hotel was relaxed and informal but with all the facilities.  There was a sauna, steam room and spacious rooms.  I would also recommend the massage.

All in all a fantastic holiday in a really nice area which is not too expensive.  The trip was made by the excellent leader and great group of people.

Classic alpine location - wide valley rising to forested hills and then high mountains. The hotel is placed on the side of the valley in a rural setting and it is possible to walk straight from the door. Family hotel very well run with great food, sauna, steam room. Excellent leader.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The area had had a lot of snow as had most of the northern alps so this curtailed walking high up. However we had some lovely walks and, when the weather was good, breathtaking views. Hot air balloons filled the sky with their bright colours one day and one of them struggled to keep up quite close to us. I loved the Sonnenalp hut where we sat outside in the sun having lunch looking at the view with chickens and rabbits pottering around. I liked the challenge and satisfaction of the ascents and relished the exhilaration of the shortcuts when we ran down the steep bits through deep snow.
What did you think of your group leader?
Barbara was a very good leader. She was new to this area and on top of that she had to contend with exceptional snowfall. She worked out very satisfying walks within the limitations. Her knowledge, fitness and judgement were excellent. The week ran very smoothly thanks to her planning: she was efficient and professional.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
So far for me this is one of the best locations - if not the best-  for snowshoeing in the Exodus brochure.I would like to go again when the conditions allow higher walking.
