  • FINNISH WILDERNESS WEEK

Absolutely wonderful scenery - sparkling snow covered trees and permanent twilight give it a magical feel. The activities were a lot of fun even at minus thirty and good clothing and equipment is all provided. It's certainly laid back and anyone can have a go at most things if they don't mind falling over a few times. There is plenty of free time on this trip, so make the most of the sauna, the mini hot tub and the (costly) optional activities or come prepared with uno and a good book. The cabins have brilliant underfloor heating, the food is tasty and plentiful (lunch is €11 extra each day) and the team is very friendly.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The enthusiasm and strength of the husky teams was awesome. I'll never forget the quiet whisper of the sledge and the sense of wonder as we sailed along the trails in the remote forest under the pink skies.

A fantastic week in the wilderness with the enthusiastic and friendly huskies.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Seeing the huskies for the first time, feeling their excitement and joy and the fact that they were so friendly. Riding the sled through the snowy wilderness and marvelling at the incredible scenery, nothing but snow and trees for miles. Seeing the Northern Lights, if only faintly and briefly. The snow shoe walk on the Little Bear Trail was wonderful, so peaceful and remote.
What did you think of your group leader?
Eki was brilliant. It was the first time this trip had been run, with the 3 day husky sledding and he coped admirably with the complications of the numerous optional excursions he offered for the times we weren't with the huskies. The rest of the staff at Basecamp were also really friendly and helpful.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Although beanie hats are supplied, I took my own warm hat, as on the husky ride your ears and neck can get really cold. Otherwise the thermals and other gear supplied were excellent.

When first starting off with the huskies REMEMBER to keep your foot on the brake! To the amusement of my fellow sledders, I was a bit slow on the brake and for a moment both sled and I left the ground! Also try not to demolish the sled by wrapping it around a tree!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Go for it - a fantastic week. Can't wait to go again.

This was one of the best holidays I've had in a very long time.  If you haven't been to Finland before and you love your winter holidays, then this is for you.  The people of Finland are the most friendly and polite you could ever wish to meet.  Stunning scenery, our lovely Finnish hosts, brilliantly organised activities and great company.  Cross country skiiing is going to be one of my favourite winter sports from now on.  I was sad when ur week came to an end, but came back feeling super healthy (even if slightly k*******d) I loved it!!!!!!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The scenery in the national parks was awe inspiring.  Some wonderful memories of our husky rides through the most unspoilt wilderness with lunches in the open air or in tipis, in sub zero temperatures sat around fires on reindeer skins.
What did you think of your group leader?

Eki was amazing.  He runs Basecamp Oulanka with the help of an amazing team and their knowledge of the local area and it's flora and fauna was excellent. With his help and willingness to make sure we had the best holiday, we did all of the activities that we could and packed them in to a week.  I can't not mention our host Lowric from the husky farm.  If it wasn't for him and his team we wouldn't have seen much of this beautiful part of the world.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Just enjoy yourselves...................then again, it's hard not to.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Go and try it for yourselves, you won't be disappointed.

Great week in the finish wilderness with so much snow. Eventhough we stayed at the same place for one week, there was no boredom: every day we did new activities and got to know the area from a different perspective! Perfect winterholiday, would recommend it to everyone.

A great trip with varied activities each day and the opportunity to use the equipment in the spare time, meant no time for boredom. This along with the fresh air and great, constantly changing scenery, due to the weather, led to total enjoyment

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Without doubt the best moment for me was the Husky sledging, lovely sunny day, great scenery and dogs who looked like they were having a great time.
What did you think of your group leader?
Martti was keen and always helpful and always had plenty of willing and able colleagues to assist when required
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
They really do supply all the winter clothes you require, a change for a relaxing evening is all you need to take. Always able to slip the winter gear over this if the Northern lights make their appearance

A week in the snow isn't for everyone but if your even considering this trip i'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it. You get "taster sessions" of a few activities which is great if you haven't done these before. The one drawback is that without signing up for "optional activities", which are pretty expensive and in some cases very poor value for money, you get far too much free time in a place where there are a limited number of things to do.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Normally I would say the dog sledding which was just great but on our trip we were very lucky with the northern light's seeing them five night's out of seven with a tremendous display one night. This was without doubt the highlight of the week, Henri put the show in his all time top five!!
What did you think of your group leader?
Henri was great, cheerful, helpful and informative and all in good english!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
They issue you with all the clothing you need for the outdoors so you can probably leave some of the things you were going to bring at home, the only exception in my opinion is headgear which you can never have too much of.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I hope you're lucky with the lights!

It was a week of beautiful scenery, good company and experiencing the wonders of winter activities.  This was my first winter holiday, and although slighly nervous about some of the activities as I had never done them before, the experience was not a disappointment and was something I would recommend to anyone.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The dogsledding was for me, my most inspirational moment, there is no other feeling than being as one with the dogs and seeing scenary that you would not normally see from the road, it was completely mystical.  The dogs were great as well albeit some hair-raising moments when I thought I was going to lose control of my sled.

What did you think of your group leader?
The group leader was very friendly and accomodating.  If you ever needed any information, advise or assistance both the group leader and his team were available and would always go the extra mile to help.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Give everything a go...  if you are a complete novice like I was then it is easy to want to skip certain activities however the leaders are very supportive, so if you have the money look at the additional activities that you can do like the rock climbing or jet skiing - promise you it will be a great experience!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
If you are going on this trip, from personal experience I know you will thoroughly enjoy yourself!
