Frequently Asked Questions
About Your Trip
Do I need any previous experience to take part in the activities?
All of the activities arranged are designed as beginner level and full instruction will be given before you undertake any of them. Previous experience isn't essential (although it always helps!) but a reasonable level of fitness is required.

Can I make my own way to the start point of this winter trip?
It is very difficult to make your own way and we strongly recommend that you make arrangements to meet the Exodus group transfer. If you are unsure, or would like to arrange to be added to this, please contact Exodus for more information.

What is the Finnish wilderness hotel like?
Quite nice actually! The Hotel Kalevala is located on the shores of Lake Lammasjarvi, the characterful wooden building has 44 twin bedded rooms, all with ensuite bathrooms. The excellent
restaurant overlooks the lake, and serves 4-course dinners with plenty of local produce including fish and wild berries. Other facilities include two saunas (male and female), a peat sauna and wellbeing department with Jacuzzi and massage services. Communal areas include a welcoming lobby with a warming fire, library room and internet access.

Will I see the Northern Lights?
The breathtaking Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are one of natures most awe-inspiring shows, but to see the Northern Lights is not an easy thing. Here are a few hints on when and where to see them. An Exodus adventure holiday isn't a bad place to start.
They can be seen as far south as Scotland, but the best locations for sightings lie in a wide ring that more or less follows the Arctic Circle. Think Iceland, Greenland, North Norway, Sweden, Finland, Canada and Alaska.
The ‘season’ runs from October to March. Within this window the slightly better months for activity are October, February and March. During periods of high solar activity (not forecastable) they can often be seen every night, but the sky has to be clear of cloud cover of course, and you need to be away from other light sources.

What kind of luggage should I take?
There's really no restiction, whatever feels comfortable for you. Whether that's a wheelie case or a rucksack, you won't be carrying it too far so don't worry!
Amanda Ceraolo - Product Manager
What kind of boots do I need for snowshoeing?
You should take waterproof walking boots or insulated boots with good ankle support. Snow shoes can be adjusted to fit any size boot, so you shouldn't have any problems.
