In the remote east of Finland, close to the border with Russia, and surrounded by frozen lakes and vast forests, is the charming Hotel Kalevala. This is a highlight of the trip, as not only does the hotel have excellent facilities, but is also set in a stunning wilderness location, perfect for a week of winter activities. Here our varied programme includes cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and a full day driving dogsleds with friendly, lively huskies.
There is even the opportunity to try a spot of ice-fishing and if you are brave enough, the traditional Finnish ice-plunge. We leave two days free for optional trips or further participation in whatever you have enjoyed the most.
All the excursions (apart from dogsledding) begin directly from our hotel, and after your day's activities you can unwind in a soothing sauna and dine beside spectacular views of the lake as you sample the excellent local dishes.
What makes this trip responsible?
Our accommodation for this tour, Hotel Kalevala, aims to generate employment and revenue in the Kuhmo region by working closely with smaller local companies, such as one-man run safari companies, that work to promote and sustain the area in which they grew up in. Local traditions are encouraged and preserved through the hotel as it includes entertainment programmes that see ancient folklore interact with the guests through singing and dancing. Transportation, activity companies, guides and food are also all from the area. The hotel buys and uses as much local produce as possible, i.e. berries, mushrooms and fish and the rye bread that is provided has been created in conjunction with the nearby bakery. In an increasing effort to promote the sustainability of the regions’ wilderness, all decorations, such as flowers, pine cones, stones and bark are from the surrounding Taiga forest.
