A fantastic ski area, great group and the most challenging conditions possible!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The week was brilliant! The hotel was lovely and conveniently near to the loipe. Oberammergau itself was a beautiful town with several cafes offering delicious gluhwein and apple strudel.

The race day itself was a challenge to say the least with unusually cold temperatures of -22 degrees! However with the support of 3 of the group I made it and we all crossed the finish line together.

What did you think of your group leader?
Eric and Heather Woolley - Superstars!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Work on your fitness beforehand to really make the most of the skiing and bring nice warm gloves. Hand warmers would be good for when you are waiting on the start line.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
    Go for it!

If you've tried a couple of improving your skiing trips, you might find yourself wanting to try something a bit different or something more testing. If this is the case, a ski marathon trip could be for you. The Konig is a good choice if you find the size and hype of the better known events daunting or offputting. The course is not unduly demanding and is conviently located close to the town of Oberammagau, your base for the trip.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The scramble and chaos of a marathon start may not be for everyone but I loved it and it did give me a rush, again the smaller size field  of the event (around 5000) ehlps here for those that may not be so enthusiastic.
What did you think of your group leader?
Eric and Heather Woolley have an undeniable ski pedigree. Tutition is excellent, being a mixture of periods of exercies and drills and longer periods of skiing, when Eric observes and offer advice where required.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If the 50k seems too much there's always the shorter 23k, all the fun for less!!

As usual the logistics of getting from glasgow to Innbrnck over two days worked like a well oiled sewing machine and it was the same on the return the bonus was my ski luggage bag( 1 bag) went from glasgow straight through to Innsbruck and no charges. The holiday and the hotel was first class with a warm civilised ski room.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

For myself if there is a race it is the race day.I think Oberammergau is a great skiing area with a lot of easy flat loipe some hilly downs quite short with good run outs and nothing to difficult for most skiiers.

What did you think of your group leader?
Eric and Heather are excellent always helpful and a good laugh.I am not sure if it was not for Eric wither there would be any race holidays.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Plenty of thin layers and carry something to drink.I If you are carrying skis with a well know british air line make sure its a big bag that you can get ever thing into including  your boots.
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Would like to see more race holidays in the future.

It was a very enjoyable holiday with great company, a comfortable hotel with lovely meals. The skiing was very accesible which meant that I spent lots of time skating.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Completing the race and getting my medal, knowing that even at -22C I could ski competently.
What did you think of your group leader?
Excellent leadership both in trms of technique, training and logistics Eric is a GOD.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Douing a ski marathon is a peak experience and remains a joy in the mind for ever. The difficulties fade, the effort recedes in the mind and I was left with a warm glow that I hope sustains me for many years
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Hopefully Exodus will develop there epxertise in providing these trips and we can all meet again and complete more marathons

A lovely ski area in the heart of Bavaria: quiet, well-cut tracks, a charming town, a great group and a tough but rewarding race at the end all added up to a wonderful week’s skiing.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
It had to be crossing the finishing line at the end of the marathon. The cold temperatures added an extra challenge to the race, so I felt I had definitely earned my gluhwein afterwards! The course also passed in front of one of King Ludwig’s castles … though there was little time to stop and admire it on this occasion. It was a great week from start to finish: the scenery was lovely, the hotel friendly and welcoming, and we were in the centre of strudel country where the food is hearty with a capital H!
What did you think of your group leader?

Eric was fantastic – as ever. His vast experience of ski marathons meant everything ran smoothly, allowing us to focus on the race itself, while his legendary good humour made the whole week highly enjoyable. And Eric’s wife, Heather, provided great support and encouragement to us all.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Whilst you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to do the race, it’s good to build up some stamina beforehand. And, as we found out, bring plenty of layers as you just don’t know what the weather might be.
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Taking part in a cross country ski race gives a real sense of personal achievement and creates great group camaraderie. An unforgettable experience!
