SNOWSHOEING AT RONDABLIKK
8 days from GBP895 to GBP1,095 including flights
Tripcode: CNK
Itinerary
- Day 1
- Fly to Oslo; transfer to Rondablikk (approx. 4 hours).
- Day 2 - 4
- We prefer not to specify in advance where we will walk each day. This is to enhance the flexibility and adapt to weather conditions, and to some extent the ability of each group. When choosing walks, the leader's priority will be to take in a full variety of scenery and of course to spend as much time as possible in the snow! The possibilities include: Lake Furusjøen shore. Just over a kilometre from our hotel. On its southern shore are some attractive log-cabins, mostly used by Norwegian families, and beyond these is a less-frequented area, where a 'wild camp' has been established. It's just a couple of wooden shelters and a Lapp tent, but it makes a good lunchtime objective early in the week and has great views across to the Rondane massif. The valley to the east. East of our hotel lies a wide valley that rises gently from Lake Furusjøen. Come out here in a blizzard and it feels bleak and desolate, but on a fine sunny day it has a great feeling of openness and remoteness. We cross to Hovdepiggen, a little peak that rises just high enough to make it a fine viewpoint. The forest to the west. A circuit here takes us in and out of mature forests interspersed with frozen lakes, marshes and other clearings. Now and again we pass remote cabins hidden in the woods. The Tjørnsaeter fells. These hills rise to the southeast of Rondablikk and their summits reach about 1300m. We will climb slowly but steadily to the rounded peak of Middagshaugen (1264m) which has an unbeatable outlook over the high tops of the Rondane and Jotunheim ranges.
- Day 5
- A fun day on cross-country skis. Your snowshoe leader will give you basic instruction and hints, and take you on a short tour. Please note that the snowshoe leader is not a qualified ski instructor, but is competent to handle an introductory day on cross-country skis.
- Day 6
- Free day. Try dogsledding with local Musher Kurt Stolpestad (see extra expenses for prices). Alternatively you can use either the snowshoes or the cross-country skis at the hotel. Any excursions using these will be unguided, and clients should take careful advice on routes and possible weather conditions.
- Day 7
- Final day walk on snowshoes, our leader will normally choose a more challenging route, to finish with a great sense of achievement.
- Day 8
- Transfer to Oslo. Fly to London.
