Frequently Asked Questions
About Your Trip
Do I need any previous experience to take part in the activities?
All of the activities arranged are designed as beginner level and full instruction will be given before you undertake any of them. Previous experience isn't essential (although it always helps!) but a reasonable level of fitness is required.

What kind of luggage should I take?
There's really no restiction, whatever feels comfortable for you. Whether that's a wheelie case or a rucksack, you won't be carrying it too far so don't worry!

Can I make my own way to the start point of this winter trip?
It is very difficult to make your own way and we strongly recommend that you make arrangements to meet the Exodus group transfer. If you are unsure, or would like to arrange to be added to this, please contact Exodus for more information.

What clothing is best for the Lapland trip?
Winter Equipment/Clothing Provided: Full Arctic outer clothing is provided: Insulated overalls, insulated boots, mittens and a fur-lined hat. Balaclavas are also available, but you may prefer to bring your own. Sleeping bags are provided for night in the wilderness lodge.
What you need to bring: Bearing in mind that temperatures vary from month to month, but are not always predictable, you need to pack for a wide range of temperatures from very cold, to mild. In colder temperatures you should wear full winter clothing under your overalls: thermal underwear; thin gloves (to wear under provided mittens); jogging bottoms or thermal underwear; at least two warm fleeces and a jacket or ski jacket. Balaclava (for December to February only). In warmer temperatures you can wear less underneath the overalls.

It can get very cold - anything I should be aware of?
Contact lenses can freeze, especially when snowmobiling - ski goggles may help. Water-based creams / moisturisers may freeze in very low temperatures. Camera batteries usually stop working in low temperatures, so take spares.

Will I see the Northern Lights?
The breathtaking Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are one of natures most awe-inspiring shows, but to see the Northern Lights is not an easy thing. Here are a few hints on when and where to see them. An Exodus adventure holiday isn't a bad place to start.
They can be seen as far south as Scotland, but the best locations for sightings lie in a wide ring that more or less follows the Arctic Circle. Think Iceland, Greenland, North Norway, Sweden, Finland, Canada and Alaska.
The ‘season’ runs from October to March. Within this window the slightly better months for activity are October, February and March. During periods of high solar activity (not forecastable) they can often be seen every night, but the sky has to be clear of cloud cover of course, and you need to be away from other light sources.

What kind of boots do I need for snowshoeing?
You should take waterproof walking boots or insulated boots with good ankle support. Snow shoes can be adjusted to fit any size boot, so you shouldn't have any problems.

Winter Activities Specific Questions
For more information on the different types of winter trips that we do, please have a look at our Winter Activies programme online.
Our leaders will do their utmost to ensure the personal safety and security of our clients, but all winter activities do bring a risk of physical injury. Beginners to certain activities such as cross-country skiing or ski-touring will inevitably fall over many times; usually the falls are minor and are regarded as part of the fun, but occasionally more serious injuries (such as broken bones) occur. On all mountain winter holidays we have to take extra care for our clients’ safety. Where there is a risk of avalanche, falling on slopes or dangers due to the cold, our guides are extra cautious. If the guide considers situations to be above a reasonable level of risk, activities may have to be cancelled. However, please note that we can never completely eliminate all risks.
