Winter tourism is booming in the Czech Republic and with such a wealth of great resorts it's not hard to see why. Spindleruv Mlyn is one of the best and most established, set high in the Krkonose Mountains in the north of the country. With plenty of established and well maintained pistes, tracks and miles of white landscape to explore, this is an ideal place to throw yourself into the world of winter sports. We try downhill and cross-country skiing, head out on snowshoes and have a day dogsledding in an action-packed week in the snowy landscape. We also have a day in Prague, to relax in and explore one of Europe's most vibrant capital cities.
What makes this trip responsible?
The local area we visit has a strong tradition in winter sports and relies more and more on tourism as a source of income to supplement the traditional revenue streams such as farming. This helps to ensure the continuation of the local history and traditions, as well as encouraging the community to maintain the natural environment for the benefit of visitors. We stay in local, often family-run accommodation, and our operator rents all equipment locally. These aspects contribute to the continuation of the community itself, by creating jobs and offering career prospects to local people, who may otherwise be tempted to move to a larger town or city in search of employment. Our stay in Prague contributes in a wider sense to the cultural preservation of the city’s main sights, through revenue generated from entrance fees.
