Accommodation
SMALL PENSIONS & MOUNTAIN HUTS
Over the week, we spend a total of four nights in the friendly pension Kandilj, located next to the old town of Sarajevo, where all rooms are en suite. We stay in traditional mountain huts in the village of Umoljani and Prokosko Lake, which are heated by wood-burning stoves. The huts have shared toilets and showers inside the house and we usually share 3-4 person rooms. Our final night in the mountains is in Hostel Feri, a newly rebuilt mountain chalet with en suite rooms situated close to the ski lifts of the Olympic resort of Igman.
Food
All breakfasts, 5 lunches and 6 dinners included.
Reality Check
The difficulty of this trip depends very much on the snow conditions, and our final route will be dictated by the conditions, altough in general you should expect the following: Grade: B/C Altitude gain: between 200-600 metres ascent on most days. Some of the ascents are quite steep, snowshoes can be removed if necessary.
Walking time will usually be around four to six hours walking, plus photo, lunch and snack breaks; the longest day is up to 8 hours. Distance walked: averages about 7 kms (4.5 miles) but will feel longer in the snow.
Activity details and risk of injury All active winter holidays involve some element of risk; from something as normal as slipping on icy pavements, to the possibility of injuries sustained as a result of the activities themselves. While we do all we can to minimize any dangers, participants must be prepared to accept some risk as part of the holiday.
Mountain snowshoeing We have chosen to categorize this holiday as 'Mountain snowshoeing'. This is described as: taking place in mountainous terrain, but where we restrict travel to areas considered to have low or non-existent avalanche risk. In certain extreme conditions avalanches may become a risk in areas generally considered to be safe, and standard walks may have to be re-routed, replaced or cancelled. Each day the leader will carefully assess the situation and choose the route according to current conditions and those forecast, with the overriding priority being group safety. Our leaders are required not to proceed with any proposed route (including those mentioned in brochure or trip notes) if they believe the risk to be unacceptable.
NB: Snowshoes are adaptable to fit most trekking boot sizes. However, if you wear larger than UK size 12 boots (US13 or EU47) please let us know at the time of booking. We will then be able to confirm if we can provide suitable snowshoes for you.
Normal group size and age
Normally 7 to 15. Minimum age 16.
Icons explained
The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together.
All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please
see our Solo Departures page.
In order to provide a more accurate grading system, where a trip falls between two grades we use an intermediate or split grade, for example Moderate/Challenging. Occasionally, there are optional activities available en route, in this case the optional grade is indicated in brackets, for example Grade Challenging (climb Tough+). Clearly, conditions may differ from region-to-region or month-to-month and as such the information given on these pages is designed to act as a guide only. In all cases you should refer to the respective holiday's Trip Notes for further details.
Walking & Trekking: Trips are wholly trekking-focused or simply include a significant number of walking days during the itinerary.
Winter Activities: It's about seeking out alternative ways to have fun in unspoilt locations, you won't find standard skiing or snowboarding breaks here.
Wilderness: Visit the deserts, jungles, plateaux, tundra and mountains of all seven continents, including Antarctica.
Culture: Let Exodus show you a different side to many of the world's greatest cultural attractions.
