  • CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: DOBBIACO

A perfect way to recover from the overendulgence of Christmas under the guidance of two most professional leaders.  A resort with a reputation for reliable cross country skiing to uphold.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Fresh air, clear blue skies, a good workout, great pasta.  Be outside and getting to know a diverse group of like minded people.
What did you think of your group leader?
Mary and Martin took their responsibilities seriously.  We were welcomed and well briefed on our transfer from the airport. No assumptions were made and we were encouraged to develop our technique and stretch ourselves.  Having said that, our leaders listened..... we were in Italy and a morning coffee stop is all part of the holiday!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Cross country skiing is energetic, so a reasonable level of fitness helps.  Take advantage of leaders who are interested and enthusiastic enough to help you develop your technique.  Be willing to speak up, its your holiday, say what you want, these leaders take a pride in their work.
Is there anything else you would like to add?

Dobbiaco is a small town, where there are numerous bars and cake shops to sample ... after all you have a responsibility!  The 1pm departure could leave a blank morning, so take advantage of a trip to the cheese factory if it can be arranged.  Try the local young 'parmesan' type cheese.

Comfortable accomodation with excellent shower in the room.  Good food at the hotel.  Wine list is variable, so try to sample before committing.... besides, it all adds to the fun!

Lovely hotel but too hot.  Hotel food was good and plentiful.  Skiing was good enough for beginners despite the limited snow.  Leader could have been less critical and more encouraging.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
    Mastering the snowplough turn
What did you think of your group leader?

Could have been more encouraging to those of us new to the sport.  This was a grade 2 x-country trip but was advertised as OK for confident beginners.  I don't think she appreciated this.  We were shouted at a lot during the first 2-3 days which put off quite a few.  Her manner was generally quite abrupt and once one appreciated that it was nothing personal and she treated everyone the same then it became a bit more acceptable - but not enjoyable.

However the comeraderie in the group was good and compensated to some extent.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Make sure you are fit before you travel if you are a beginner.

Nightlife in Dobiacco/Toblach is very limited - better in Niederdorf but you'll be too tired anyway.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
This is my first Exodus holiday that I have not thoroughly enjoyed (and I've done lots) don't let one bad experience put you off this holiday - you may not a) have the same leader b) have the same experience

    Exodus Response

I was sorry to hear Ms Grist's review.

We are happy to accept confident beginners on grade 2 cross-country skiing trips, yet we usually recommend they join a week that offes grades 1 and 2 (rather than grades 2 and 3). This means that leaders are able to teach basic techniques from the start and spend more time with individual instruction.

Although we received excellent feedback from other members of this group regarding the leaders, we appreciate that every style of instruction is received differently. Some clients had privately informed the leaders they were partially deaf, which may explain their voices being raised during leading. This may sound far-fetched but we have been assured that this was the case on this occasion. Our leaders have taken these comments onboard for future trips.

I had promised my boss that cross country ski-ing was 100% safe. I lied (and managed to break my arm).

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Remembering that other people can be very supportive when you need help (like cutting up my dinner).

Nice prosecco, good food and company.

Reading more than I had anticipated .... would recommend The City of Thieves

What did you think of your group leader?
Very good. Very patient and with an amazingly well prepared back pack full of first aid stuff.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Take your E111 out with you when you set out for the day just in case (and take more books than you think you need).

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The policeman at the airport asked me if I was likely to go back and to be honest after breaking my arm on day 2 this is unlikely to be a holiday I would personally repeat.

However, the rest of the group members appeared to have a fabulous time and were great fun so would probably still recommend the trip to less accident prone people than myself. There is still no better way to see snowy landscape than by cross country ski-ing.
