East of the town of Lillehammer the hills rise to a rolling plateau at a height of over 800m, peppered with lakes and several summits, some reaching over 1000m. It is here that we explore some of Europe's best cross-country skiing, in the former farming community of Sjusjoen. Indeed, the area hosted the Nordic events at the 1994 Winter Olympics. Sjusjoen boasts almost 300km of well-maintained tracks and easily accessible forest and mountain terrain. Tracks close to the hotel are ideal for beginners, while the more adventurous can tackle the summits further afield. Loipe to the east of Sjusjoen are generally flatter than those to the west, with hills of birch and spruce forests rising to rolling plateaux. Alternate routes take us to Nordseter and, for the more experienced, descend to Lillehammer where we follow stretches of the famous Birkbeiner Loipe.
