The group size was, arguably, optimal at 10. Snow conditions were excellent. Bob is an excellent leader/ guide whether out skiing or socially, eg our pleasant evening dinners in the hotel. A happy week!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Well, at my age of 73, I have to admit that I was pleased not to hold the group back (As I saw it!) and to enjoy some good skiing in fine scenery. I "skived off" one day to Innsbruck on my own - an easy journey - and enjoyed a visit to the Tyrolean Arts and Crafts Museum - the closeness of Innsbruck is a bonus.
What did you think of your group leader?
Second time with Bob in Trins. He really has the holiday wrapped up in every respect - very efficient organisation (eg the transport to the different ski areas), care of each individual while out skiing and throughout the holiday, able to share a knowledge of the Tyrol gained over many years. He helped us to bond as a group. I think he enabled all members to ski at the standard they aspired to - we had one or two younger, fitter members, who either had opportunities to ski extra circuits or take time to try out their ski/ skating technique.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Local hire of skis and ski boots is a good option. A small rucksack, which has extra straps around the chest and waist ( keeping the rucksack fully secured to you) is useful.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Theres' nothing to be done, it seems, but Austria permits segregated smoking within a building ....... so, smoke in one bar at the Wienerhof Hotel, gradually percolated during the evening to other parts of the hotel, including the dining room. It seemed too that some rooms in the annex across the road were being used by smokers with the same result. Maybe it's the contrast of the fresh mountain air .......... but I'd prefer a smoke free hotel.

Good trip for absolute beginners but didn't have enough variation of skiing routes or long enough trips to practice our skills or fully appreciate what cross country skiing is really about.  However, it is a beautiful area and the food is wonderful.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Apart from the beautiful scenery, realising I was in control of my skiing.  We also had a lot of laughs in the evenings.
What did you think of your group leader?
Bob was well meaning and good at teaching the skills.  However, on quite a few occassions we were standing in the cold listening to his long monologues.  At times he seemed quite inflexible and didn't always appreciate that we were on holiday, ie. not happy if we stopped to take photos or talked too much.  Unfortunately Bob was ill for a couple of days but arranged for another ski instructor to take us out; Hans could barely speak any English but luckily one of our group could speak German, which helped enormously.  Once Bob returned, despite us telling him what we'd learnt we still had to repeat things again and on one morning returned to the same loipe.  It felt like we had lost two days of skiing.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be aware that the Weinerhof Hotel allows smoking in the bar which also drifts into the dining room.  Also the rooms in the guest house, across the road from the main hotel, smell of smoke.

This trip is great if you have never skiied before but not particularly challenging if you want to repeat a Grade 1 week.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
I'd recommend using the Wellness Centre, it was lovely.

Breathtaking beautiful scenery when the sun shines on the snow covered Tyrolean landscape. Wonderful refreshing and revitalising holiday that requires some level of fitness at the beginning. Cross country skiing is all about a journey at a relatively slow pace through a beautiful landscape. The slow climbs are rewarded by the fun downhill runs.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Skiing at the Maria Waldrast location was wonderful. The scenery was completely stunning. It was like being in a winter wonderland. Simply a magical place.
What did you think of your group leader?
Bob is a very experienced and knowledgeble guide who taught us well how to cross country ski. He is well organised and generally very patient. He is passionate about the Brits being responsible tourists by treating the locals with great sensitivity and respect. He showed me great compassion when I told him of my fathers funeral  the day before the trip commenced. He enjoyed pointing out golden eagles and chamois in the distant landscape. His eyesight is excellent !
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Do prepare your body for the physical demands of cross country skiing so that your strength and fitness levels will not let you down and enable you to maximise the enjoyment of cross country skiing before the trip . Do not bother to pack a ski safety helmet . Take a camera with lots of memory !

This was our first cross country skiing trip to Austria, having been twice previously with Exodus to Rondablikk in Norway. We could not fault Bob's organisation of quite a large group (it was New Year ), the accomodation and food was very good. Bob's knowledge of the area was excellent. The skiing was fun however, whilst we had a great holiday, we felt that Exodus did not accurately pitch the holiday skiing level of 2+. We are well aware that a group holiday means you will get people of varying degress of ability. However, there are simply not enough tracks or challenging enough terrain for a 2+ level. We are by no means seasoned cross country skiers but feel that the trip should be graded at the most at level 2.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The trips to Maria Waldrast were the best from our point of view, with varied skiing terrain.

What did you think of your group leader?
Bob was a very good leader - organised, patient, great knowledge of the area and attention to the groups varying skiing and non skiing needs, even going beyond the call of duty to change the lightbulb in our room!

Cross country ski-ing was a revelation. Out in the hushed countryside, following wonderful empty tracks through pine forests, beside streams, across bridges, surrounded on all sides by those Alps.  No-one for miles; no queues for lifts; no-one to mow you down.  Wonderful!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Ski-ing in snow where no-one else had been; watching avalanches (from a safe distance!); ski-ing through the forest; playing/practicing in the snow; eating Kasierschmarrn with cranberries...
What did you think of your group leader?
Outstanding - patient; encouraging; patient; really knowledgeable; experienced; patient; helpful - and did I mention how patient he was with me?
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
    Get fit first!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
This was one really well-organised holiday. Out in the middle of nowhere, but local buses to take you to a different valley each day so you really see a lot of the area. Amazing Alpine views and scenery; fabulous scenic tracks to ski along; and abundant, authentic Austrian food. Comfortable family-run hotel. Only one night when food could have been better - but that was the night the restaurant was actually closed, so I'm guessing the chef had a night off. Might be a good opportunity to visit somewhere else to eat that night? Am now on a mission to get fitter in time for next year so I can go again and really crack the skiing!

If you are a doubting 'down-hiller' thinking this maybe a bit tame for you - you're in for a surprise!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Getting to a sufficient skill level which transforms 'walking around with planks of wood on your feet' to passing as a x-country skier by learning to 'diagonally glide' - which makes live so much easier.

The whole experince was great - in terms of skiing in four different valleys, and staying in a tiny Austrian village - which meant you got a real feel for the culture of the place /country - and no q's for lifts / food at restaurants or general commercialism as with down-hilling - very relaxing  (and significantly cheaper too!!)

We also were lucky to see some most amazing avalanches - facinating and very noisy

What did you think of your group leader?
Unfortunately our Leader was sick for the first two days, so we had a stand-in leader who wasn't so patient with ultimate beginners - but Bob came to our rescue and by the middle of the week we were all up (well most of the time) and skiing. Personally I thought the group was too big for one Leader, but Bob did manage us well - and managed to teach what became a mixed ability group by mid-week by offering something for everyone and ensuring we could all meet up for lunch.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

A visit or two to the gym in advance would be helpful, unless you're reasonably fit anyway and/or a regular walker in which case you should have no difficulties for the beginners holiday.

You may also want to consider taking flip flops and a robe - as the very welcome and appointed sauna is in one of the accomodation blocks across from the main hotel - although no costumes necessary (which means you certainly get to know your fellow travellers quickly!).

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thanks to all my fellow travellers, Bob and the Hotel - for making my birthday such a special occasson - I was truely spoilt by all - Thanks.

Great week, great snow, good company and I found I could ski! Hope to go again! To be recommended and for the G.O.D. Brigade (I.e. Growing Old Disgracefully.) I loved the experience.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
    The sun on the mountains.
What did you think of your group leader?
1st one possibly would have preferred to have been on holiday, as planned. The 2nd one looked after the group without fault.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Dont have too high an expectation. Enjoy the total experience.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thanks to the leader for getting up early to see me off!
