Very good choice of place for cross country skiing! A small french hotel with warm accueil. Excellent food. Everything was well planned and done. Our instructor - leader and his wife -Cathy - very nice couple that helped everyone

In contrast to reviews from last year we almost had too much snow. Mid-week snow was falling at 10cm an hour. This meant that half a metre of snow had fallen while we were skiing, and the mini-buses had to be dug out. Our group consisted of 15 people of a wide range of standards, but we were all well catered for by James, ably assisted by Nathan.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The last day was a perfect skiing day, with lots of sun and snow. We skiied at Chioulla where the run to Prades was opened for the first time in three years and we were amongst the first to ski it.
What did you think of your group leader?
Excellent. On this holiday, James was assisted by Nathan. Our group of 15 included beginners through to grade 3 skiers. All were well looked after by James's flexible approach to leading.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
On the rest day I went downhill skiing at Bonascre. You need your passport or some similar ID to hire downhill skis. If you are over 60 you can also get a discount on the lift pass, but you need to hang on to your passport to prove it. I also took out the assurance with the lift pass at 2 Euro 50. Past experience of having to produce a credit card to get someone rescued from the piste in France means I always get this.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
James and Nathan also had to cope with the varying conditions that started perfect, but were followed by a day of winds that closed the top, exposed tracks. This was followed by the heavy snow that meant tracks were filling in as soon as they were cut. The final 2 days had ideal weather, but the track cutters had their work cut out to recover after the heavy snowfall. James kept in touch with the people cutting these tracks to always make the most of what was available. Often we were the first to use a track after it had been opened.

A beautiful area with lots to do.  Great enthusiasm and encouragement from James and Cathy who couldn't do enough to make sure we all had a great time

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Snowshoeing high onto a mountain range with views across to Andorra and Spain.  As a novice to snowshoeing it was quite an opening experience

Experimenting with skating technique - not a natural, but it certainly informed both my classic and downhill capabilities

ski-ing down from one resort to another - awesome

What did you think of your group leader?
James was an inspirational leader - charming, full of enthusiasm, a great teacher and fun
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The area at Beille requires quite a bit of uphill to get to the main cross-country area.  It is hard work getting up there.  Also there is no cafe/restaurant to target once up there.  There is only the one at the main car park which requires a big descent and then a climb if you want to go back up after lunch.

Never got to see Chioula due to lack of snow, but think it may have had more refreshment options

Is there anything else you would like to add?

A wonderful base for winter or summer holidays.  I would definitely consider returning.  And good luck to Cathy and James.

The Hotel Terminus had a certain charm and the food was great, but the rooms were all in need of refurbishment.  Beware the rooms with bathroom - bring your own plug or seek out the quincaillerie in town to purchase a universal plug - not much point in booking a room with a bath to find it has no plug!

    Exodus Response

It is great to see such great feedback about this trip. Cathy and James work hard to ensure a good time is had by all and the hotel works very well for our groups.  It is always best to raise any issues or problems with the room/hotel directly with the reception so that they are able to replace any missing items or respond to any problems you may have.  However, this feedback will be passed on to the hotel and your comments are appreciated.

A great holiday - the guides managed to make the best an almost total lack of snow and we had an excellent time snow-shoeing and sight-seeing, as well as making the most out of every last bit of piste!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Snow-shoeing up to the top of a reasonably substantial peak...and then sliding back down on mini-toboggans.
What did you think of your group leader?
Superb - knowledgable, friendly and helpful (both leaders).
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Don't assume there will be snow - global warming has made things a little more unpredictable than in the past!  Pack for every eventuality and travel with an open mind.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Great area to visit - with or without snow.  I recommend the trip to Montsegur if you get the chance - it's amazing.

Cathy and James who organised the trip out in France were really lovely and made our holiday very enjoyable. I would strongly recommend cross country skiing to people who enjoy running or walking in the hills.
