Deep in Finnish Lapland, the village of Akaslompolo lies at an altitude of 220m and is 200km north of the Arctic Circle. It is a captivating place, and many skiers return year after year, drawn by the combination of excellent skiing and comfortable accommodation. At night you have the chance to see the Northern Lights whilst during the day there's almost 300km of well-designed tracks to choose from. Surrounded by the peaceful old forests of the Pallas-Yllas Nature Park, on most days we ski across the Lake Akaslompolojarvi towards the fells, taking in some breathtaking scenery. Some tracks are fairly flat and it is possible to ski long easy circuits from our hotel. Other loipe climb over the area's 'seven fells' - rounded hills reaching 700m. From their summits we can look east towards Russia or west to the border with Sweden.
