    Our Tunisian adventure allowed us to see the many facets of Tunisian culture, cuisine, history and geography.  We experienced everything from seeing the Star Wars sites, to octopus fishermen readying their gear for the season, to quietly observing a demonstration by an elder Berber woman as she wove in her very humble home.  The country and its people are far more diverse than we ever expected and this was a most wonderful surprise.

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    Christmas day in the Sahara is hard to beat and we were very fortunate to be in Douz during the Sahara festival where so many diverse and interesting people come together.  Our camel drivers patiently showed us how to make bread desert-style and entertained us at night with drums and song, all with the camels and a starry night sky as a backdrop.  Also, the spice markets, pottery, weavings and fresh seafood were all unbelievable and I will move heaven and earth to try to find fresh dates from Douz in Canada!

    What did you think of your group leader?

    Sonia was exceptional!  She was patient and well organized and chatted with us about customs, cuisine, traditions, trade and the people.  She was the first to rise and last to retire and always made sure we were prepared for the day’s adventure.  We had no worries except to make sure we had lots of camera memory and fully charged batteries.  Our happiness and satisfaction was paramount and she would take the time to sit and chat with our 14 year old son to get to know him and to make sure he was enjoying himself.  Sonia is now an honoured member of our family.

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Pack lightly and take easily serviceable clothes with your, especially layers and a good pair of sunglasses.  We had lightweight walking boots that worked well in the cities and towns, as well as the desert.  Read the trip notes to ensure you take a sleeping bag whilst camping in the Sahara.  We camped on December 25th and it got down to freezing and we were quite comfortable in a lightweight sleeping bag rated to -7 celcius.  Leave lots of room in your luggage to take home pottery and weavings, as well as spices from Djerba and dates from Douz.

    Is there anything else you would like to add?

    We were excited to visit Tunisia, but we came away with so much more than we anticipated.  Tunisia is an exotic blend of Mediterranean, Arab, African, European, and Tribal influences that is manifested in its people, cuisine, architecture and traditions.  Our guide Sonia helped to not just see the country, but to understand it.  We are so grateful that we gave ourselves the “gift” of visiting Tunisia and very happy with having chosen Exodus to help us experience it.

    A "nicely balanced" holiday, with some travelling but not over-long days, some sightseeing [of Berber villages and desert oases, crocodile farms and camel rides], and with "adventure" - camping in the desert under the stars, 4 X 4 driving across the desert plains, and quad -biking!

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    Liked the camping in the desert, even if the wind howled all night long!

    Loved wandering around the old "bohemian" part of Tunis

    Enjoyed seeing the villages, and mountain scenery where films like "An English Patient" had been made.

    What did you think of your group leader?
    Excellent..... a real star......always helpful.....and with a genuine desire to explain life in her country
    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
    Yes....take sunglasses or goggles to "shelter" your eyes , if its windy when on the camel trek in the desert
    Is there anything else you would like to add?
    no

    The trip is very well-balanced: there is a right amount of history, culture, natural landscapes and active pursuits to keep children and parents interested. I enjoyed every minute of it!

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
    Every day had its most inspirational moment… For me, that included:
    • the ancient synagogue El Ghriba (read a lot about it);
    • the fortified granary Ksar Ouled Soltane (I saw pictures of it in my childhood);
    • troglodyte dwellings (read a lot about them);
    • camping in the Sahara (something to remember for the rest of the life);
    • the salt lake Chott El Jerid (a salt lake is one of my favourite types of landscape);
    • quad biking and 4x4 excursion in the desert near Nefta (adrenaline rush in beautiful surroundings);
    • wandering in Sidi Bou Said (feel yourself like a French civil servant in the colonial times ;-).
    What did you think of your group leader?

    You can't find a guide better than Sonia! She has a profound knowledge of Tunisian ancient and recent history and is keen to answer any questions about the country. Besides, she has a special talent of organising picnics in the most unusual places: you MUST be there to appreciate that!

    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
    Spring is a season of sand storms in the Sahara. Sonia says that winter is a better season for camping in the desert.
    Is there anything else you would like to add?
    I highly recommend the trip and Sonia as your guide: you will see truly unique places in a country which is mostly known as a beach-holiday destination.

    What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

    Camping in the Sahara Desert. We met our camel drivers away from the main tourist madness & the whole trip was magical. The children loved playing in the sand dunes & the camel drivers were warm & friendly, cooking us a delicious meal on the camp fire. Watching the sun set in the West & the full moon rise in the East casting a silvery light over the sand dunes is a memory we will never forget.

    What did you think of your group leader?
    Sonia was absolutely wonderful. She was very knowledgable about all the places we visited and was brilliant with the children. She made us feel more like guests than tourists & by the end of the week she felt like a good friend.
    Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

    Some of the days are quite long for the children & there is an itinerary to follow which means you don't have the freedom to do what you want (the kids just wanted to play in the pool on one occasion). We stayed in a different hotel every night so had to be organised with our packing - some of the hotels only have twin rooms & so we were split into 2 rooms on a couple of occasions. We packed one bag for my husband & son & one for me & my daughter so this worked ok. There wasn't always a choice of food but it was all really good, just tell your children that they must have a great sense of adventure try lots of different things (like in Indiana Jones!)

    Is there anything else you would like to add?
    We all loved this holiday, the children learnt so much about the country but also had a lot of fun, especially in the dune buggies & 4 x 4 trip!
