From busy Bangkok with its magnificent temples and lively markets, we head west for some beautiful countryside and the slower pace of rural Thailand. We visit the site of the Bridge on the River Kwai, the spectacular Erawan Waterfall as well as the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya. Then we head north exploring the Chiang Mai region on foot, elephant back and even by bamboo raft. We are house guests at Mae Kompong village where direct input from the community has helped develop a Community Based Tourism Initiative project. For two days we are immersed in village life and get to know our host families whilst exploring the surrounding area. Finally we enjoy a well-earned rest on the tropical island of Koh Samet.
| Day 1 | Start Bangkok. |
| Day 2 | Tour of Bangkok including the Grand Palace and Wat Pho; afternoon to Kanchanaburi and a boat ride on the River Kwai. |
| Day 3 | Visit Hellfire Pass and beautiful Erawan Falls; afternoon free to relax, swim or walk to the top of the falls. |
| Day 4 | Journey to Ayutthaya, ancient capital of Thailand, where we see the ruins; overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai. |
| Day 5 | Visit Wat Doi Suthep (temple) and the Tribal Research Institute; evening free for shopping in Chiang Mai's fantastic night market. |
| Day 6 | Visit an elephant camp where we can go elephant riding. |
| Day 7 - 8 |
To Mae Kompong village for 2 days witness village life while hosts of local families. Easy walking through the community forest, high ropes course (optional). Return to Chiang Mai on the evening of day nine. |
| Day 9 | Fly to Bangkok and transfer to Koh Samet. |
| Day 10 - 11 |
Two full days to relax on the beach, go snorkelling or enjoy some of the many optional excursions. |
| Day 12 | Morning at leisure; afternoon return to Bangkok. |
| Day 13 | Free day in Bangkok for last minute shopping or relaxation. |
| Day 14 | End Bangkok. |
