This long and tough trek is graded C/D (Challenging/Tough). The GR20 requires a good level of fitness, mountain walking experience and a sure footedness for the rocky landscape and mountain ridges, as well as a head for heights. Although the GR20 is not technically challenging, it involves plenty of ascents and descents, scrambling and the occasional use of fixed chains and a ladder (via ferrata). Each day you can expect to walk for an average of 6 to 9 hours (not including stops) with considerable daily ascents and descents with rough underfoot (averaging +800m and -800m per day, not including the optional summit ascents/descents).
The main luggage is driven from base to base for you, so you only have to carry your gear for the day and perhaps a packed lunch.
The paths are well marked with red and white painted signs on rocks, trees and other convenient objects.
Normal group size and age
Self-guided tour, minimum 2 people due to safety reasons. Luggage is transferred and will be accessible most days of the tour. Minimum age 18.
Self-Guided trips are only available to cycling enthusiasts in Europe. These holidays are the perfect choice for those who like to travel independently and at your own pace, yet still benefit from our quality research, back-up and support. We'll arrange your accommodation, provide you with detailed maps and route notes, and transport your bags from one hotel to the next.
In order to provide a more accurate grading system, where a trip falls between two grades we use an intermediate or split grade, for example Challenging/Tough. Occasionally, there are optional activities available en route, in this case the optional grade is indicated in brackets, for example Grade Challenging (climb Tough+). Clearly, conditions may differ from region-to-region or month-to-month and as such the information given on these pages is designed to act as a guide only. In all cases you should refer to the respective holiday's Trip Notes for further details.
