  • CYCLING THE ALENTEJO

Nice end-of summer break - a week of blue skies, friendly group and pleasant mix of coast and countryside. Cycling was easier than expected, probably 'easy to moderate' rather than the 'moderate' grade given by Exodus.  Would suit someone trying their first 'moderate' trip better than someone wanting more-serious cycling.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Arriving at some of the beaches - we have great beaches on Anglesey as well, but aren't always guaranteed warm sunshine at the end of September and into October.
What did you think of your group leader?
Joao was excellent - always kept an eye out for people to ensure the group didn't get too strung out, and was very patient at dealing with repeated requests for translation of Portuguese menus.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If you want a holiday with a reasonable amount of cycling between beaches and cafe stops this would be good. If you want a cycling holiday with the emphasis on cycling you may want to try an alternative; the other 'moderate'-graded trips I've been on with Exodus and with other companies have had more cycling.

Portugal was more expensive than I expected; prices for eating out are not far off UK-levels at current exchange rates.  I last visited over 15 years ago when Portugal was a very low-cost country and was surprised at how much more expensive it had become.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Easyjet flights were delayed on the way home.  The departures board at Lisbon listed about thirty flights, including about five from Easyjet.  Four of the Easyjet flights were delayed but only one out of the twenty-six or so other flights.  On the holiday feedback form I recommended that Exodus should use proper airlines, even charter airlines, rather than Easyjet or other down-market operators such as R***air with similar reputations.
