Reality Check
This trip is classified Road and graded B/Moderate. Mountain bikes are ideal for this trip and flat bars are preferable. Please see the Cycling brochure or view the grading and trip classification page for more information.
This tour centres on the Jordan Valley using mostly tarmac roads which are generally in a good state of repair, with some unsurfaced sections. The first two riding days involve several descents on tarmac roads. In places there may be some loose stones so care needs to be taken. Some of the descents are quite steep but the leader will be able to assist you if you are not confident and the trip is fully vehicle supported should you decide you want a day off riding. The fourth day of cycling is the longest and most challenging in terms of terrain, but it is also the most spectacular. There are several ascents and one reasonably long and quite steep descent. This day is a fantastic day of riding but it is important you have a reasonable level of fitness and keep well hydrated in the warmer months. On the whole the cycling days are quite short and, other than day 6, you will not be cycling all day. The trip is well balanced with the cultural sites and these are as much the focus as the cycling.
On the two days spent in Petra there is a fair amount of walking involved, the site is big and there are opportunities to walk into the sandstone mountains to get a different and rewarding perspective of the site. Again, it is important that you have a reasonable level of fitness and that you keep well hydrated.
Whilst camping in Wadi Rum please be aware that although the campsite does have a plumbed toilet and a shower the facilities are basic and running water can be limited.
During the winter months Jordan can experience some low temperatures so it is really important that you are adequately equipped for the cycling and the night in the desert during this time. Conversely, during the summer months it can get very hot and you will need to ensure that you are hydrated and have appropriate sun protection.
If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to call us.

The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together.
All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please
see our Solo Departures page.
Most people who enjoy a weekend riding on either trails or roads at home will enjoy a B-grade trip. You need to be in good health and reasonably fit. Ideal for occasional cyclists, or as a more relaxed trip for fitter riders. B-grade off-road trips require no previous experience. Distances on road trips rarely exceed 70 kms (43 miles) per day.
Cycling: Our cycling holidays come in all shapes and sizes; from gentle self-guided trips in the Veneto, to tackling the High Atlas in Morocco, or exploring the length of Vietnam.
Culture: Let Exodus show you a different side to many of the world's greatest cultural attractions.
For those clients who wish to travel with a group of other solo/single travellers, on certain trips we have set aside departure dates that are specifically recommended for clients booking individually. Solo departures are aimed at taking away that concern that you may be the only solo traveller when you arrive overseas. Look out for the solo departures (marked with a grey icon's') by checking the notes in the dates and prices table.
However, please note that we inform any couples, or friends travelling together, who enquire about these dates that the trip is recommended for solos, but we do not refuse bookings from non-solo travellers, and we are therefore not able to guarantee that a solo departure will be exclusively made up of solo travellers.
Certain departures of this trip are marked in our brochures and online as Premium Departures labelled with
against the specific date. On these departures some elements of the trip have been changed to provide more comfort - this will generally mean we have raised the standard of hotels or switched from camping to comfortable lodges, but it may also include other changes, for example, where a long train journey has been replaced by an internal flight. Specific details about what elements of the trip have been changed can be found in the relevant sections of the Trip Notes.
