An incredible trip of a lifetime.  Stunning scenery with an abundance of Polar Bears, Walruses, Seals, Reindeer, Foxes and birds.  All accompanied by friendly, world class experts and best in class tour leaders on a great ship with the best bar/lounge viewing - 3 walls of windows to watch the world go by when it gets chilly outside.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Mette's bar talk on her times in Afghanistan.  A humourous take on an incredible life spent helping others, and she expert on the polar regions too!

The Polar bears, especially mother and 2 cubs which came right up to the ship were great too!

What did you think of your group leader?
Paul was excellent, driven to get the best out of any opportunity.  His photographs of the trip are simply stunning, challenging you to try different things.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Buy or borrow a good lense, minimum 400mm.  Use with a tripod tall enough to get over the ships bow.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We've been on a lot of great holidays but this was the best tour we've ever done

An absolutely fantastic 2 weeks, the memories of which I shall treasure forever.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The whole of day 2 and 3; I really can't choose a favourite moment out of these two days of almost constant polar bear encounters.  I have done this trip 3 years out of the last 4 and really didn't think the polar bear sightings of last year could be beaten but we equalled them by day 2 and far exceeded them by 10am on day 3.

What did you think of your group leader?

    Absolutely superb.

The combination of Paul's endless enthusiasm for polar bears and photography, Woody's expertise as an expedition leader and Annie's spotting skills are legendary.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If your main reason for visiting Spitsbergen is to see polar bears then book the photography specific trips; they do not stick to an itinery and will alter schedules to do whatever they can to get you the best polar bear sightings and photographic opportunities.

Take a laptop or external hard drive to download your photos; you will take much more than you anticipate!

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Stop thinking about whether or not to do the trip and just book it!

This was my third trip to this area and proved to be the best. The wildlife sightings and weather were superb.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Lots of bears and two females with yearlings on the ice all looking healthy. One cub left its mother and headed towards the ship, then stood up on its hind legs for a better view of us. It was so tiny against the huge ship, but a very brave young polar bear.

Another day it was sunny with clouds and no wind. This gave us stunning reflections in the calm water. I enjoy landscape photography and this experience was incredible.

Later, as we were beside a glacier on another beautiful day, we watched arctic skuas chase arctic terns or kittiwakes. The speed and manoeuvreability of these birds provided quite a spectacle.

What did you think of your group leader?
Paul was his usual enthusiastic self, providing advice and inspiration, trying to get people to challenge themselves and try something new or different in their photography.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Do not hesitate to do this trip. It will change your life.

Take warm clothes as it can be cold sitting on a zodiac due to the wind chill. Warm socks and gloves are essential. Layers are the secret of keeping warm.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
Vavilov is a very comfortable ship with good food and friendly helpful staff. There is plenty of deck space to provide good vantage points for all, when a bear is spotted.

Extreme Polar Regions seem to have been a buried desire of mine for most of my life - I guess since starting with geography lessons at the age of 10 (a very long time ago). Ice, bears, penguins, snowy wilderness have always attracted me. Whenever I saw a picture or documentary of any of the above there was a desire to actually EXPERIENCE the reality of them in person. The opportunity to do so came in the guise of a personal tragedy when my husband died suddenly and prematurely in a motor cycle accident before we could realise the dream of a trip to Antarctica - although we had begun to talk of the possibility of one day going. As I pieced my "new life" together I chatted to a few friends who had similar desires to go so in 2011 we put a party together and went to Antarctica in February 2011 where we met with Paul Goldstein. On return to South Africa I immediately started to look at the possibility of going on one of Paul's photographic expeditions to "do the other end" and go to Spitzbergen to see the bears - even though I am NO photographer. So in June 2012 I set off with 2 fellow travellers to accomplish the mission (without a camera and only armed with an ipad  - much to Paul's horror and disdain - to capture the images).

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Without a doubt experiencing multiple, extended Polar Bear sightings - spending as much a 6hrs with some of them. It was an etremely emotional experience seeing creatures of such epic proportions "up close and personal"
What did you think of your group leader?
Paul and Woody (Quark expedition leader) who I travelled with to Antarctica last year are both consumate professionals who lead with excellence and who I would gladly travel with again and again.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
JUST DO IT.  If it's on your list - dont wait for tomorrow to book. Tomorrow may never come!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
It's almost ironic that I really suffer badly in cold weather, yet if you asked me today where in the world I would most like to go to, it would most assuredly be back to Spitzbergen (or at least Polar Bear wilderness territory) despite numb hands and feet everytime I vertured out. GO FIGURE.

We were so lucky with the weather & the sightings of bears & other animals although of course I think the phrase "the more you practice the luckier you get" applies to the Exodus/Quark team & the crew of the Vavilov.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Spending the day with the "Snow Bear"

Seeing the 14th July glacier calving

Being something a kittiwake tried to hide behind when being chased by an Arctic Skua!

What did you think of your group leader?
    Hardworking and inspirational
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Bring more camera memory than you could possibly imagine you would need in your entire life!!!!!!

Possibly bring a lap top if you wish to edit photos whilst away. Although there was so much going on there wasn't much time for this!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

    Don't expect to loose weight!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Seeing the mother and two cubs being stalked by the lone male bear.... Wow!!!
What did you think of your group leader?
Woody was fantastic as ever as were all the expedition staff... Scott was a bit of a weak link nice enough chap but lacked knowledge. Paul Goldstein ... Well it was my first exposure... Huge enthusiasm, but at times brusk
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
It was a specific photographic trip....don't go on it if you are not a photographic enthusiast! But if you are you will have a ball.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Take lots of memory... Have some idea about photography Have fun!

What can one say?National Geographic, eat your heart out. We can only say we were so lucky, the quality of the team on board, the weather and of course the wildlife were all outstanding

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

So many moments to chose from.  You can't forget the sight of your first polar bear, maybe even the second.   Even the 23rd was pretty good!

A polar bear mother and cub was neat, but then a mother and 2 cubs was better.

A mother and 2 cubs being stalked by a beaten up male bear was a sight to behold, even having our Polar Bear (ian Stirling) expert purring with content.

60,000 gilmots flying around overhead wasn't bad either...

...and then there was the reflection.  With the waters of the Fjords being so calm and the skies so blue it's hard to describe the tranquility of the area

What did you think of your group leader?

    Paul Goldstein - unrivalled energy.

Who would want to run the Brighton Marathon, climb Kilimanjaro and then run the London Marathon all in 7 days, let alone with a 10ft tiger in his rucksack.

Such and eye for a great photo, with a quirkiness to go with it.  But he doesn't like puffins!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Be prepared for anything and everything.

We were lucky (or unlucky) not to get the 2am wake up call to gather on deck to see a polar bear.  We had so many to chose from without early rises

It may be cold, but in the sun may warm you through.  Take plenty of sun cream.

Dress in layers, you'll be able to adjust to temperature changes quickly.

Be prepared not to see a star for 2 weeks, with 24 hours of daylight time seems to have no meaning

Is there anything else you would like to add?

It is such and awesome experience, yes we were the fortunate ones maybe.  But you take your chances with wildlife.

Words and photos hardly describe the beauty of the region, and to see your first polar bear...
