For outdoor wear, bring wind and waterproof outer layers. Tight clothing and cotton is not recommended as it does not allow insulating air to be trapped. Wool, silk and fleece are all best for retaining heat. A complimentary parka will be provided on the ship and waterproof trousers are essential for all zodiac travel as well as activities on shore. Layers are the best way to stay warm and about six are reccomended.  A warm waterproof jacket is recomended and a warm fleece, gloves and a warm hat are essential.

Wellington boots are provided for the duration of the trip. These are essential for the landings and most passengers (and expedition staff) wear these for the walks whilst on land.  Walking boots are suitable footwear for both the zodiac cruises and whilst on the ship itself.  It's important to wear something that will keep your feet warm for the cruises and have reasonable grip whilst out on the ships deck.

British passport holders do not require a visa for most Arctic expeditions, except Northwest Passage and Journey to the North Pole, where a visa is required for Russia.  Non British nationals are advised to check with the nearest embassy or consulate of the country you plan to visit.

Trips to the Arctic regions are only possible during their summer months, as such it won't get as cold as you might expect. Whilst the weather can be variable it will rarely drop below -2 and with 24 hr sunlight can sometimes be warm. July is the warmest month normally, and  in Svalbard, the mean temperature in June is 1.8 ° C, in July 5.8 ° C and in August 4.8 ° C. However temperatures vary greatly between and within regions.  Variable wind and weather conditions may make it seem colder or warmer then it actually is and fog is very common.

We recommend that you bring sturdy, soft-sided luggage, which will be easier to stow in your cabin. Saying that, there isn't much they can't handle!
