Frequently Asked Questions

About Your Trip

How likely am I to see a Polar bear?

Thanks to the sharp eyes and expertise of the on board staff, there is an excellent chance of seeing Polar bears on this trip. However, these are wild animals so there are no guarantees. Bears might be some miles away from the ship or they might be really close. If it is possible, every effort will be made to get closer to a distant bear either using the ship or the Zodiac launches. This will be done in a way to keep any disturbance to the bear at an absolute minimum.

What kind of footwear is best for this Polar trip?

Wellington boots are provided for the duration of the trip. These are essential for the landings and most passengers (and expedition staff) wear these for the walks whilst on land.  Walking boots are suitable footwear for both the zodiac cruises and whilst on the ship itself.  It's important to wear something that will keep your feet warm for the cruises and have reasonable grip whilst out on the ships deck.

Can I communicate from the ship to home?

At an additional charge it is possible to make telephone calls and send/receive emails, however personal internet access (WiFi) is not available.

Are there any visas needed for the Arctic?

British passport holders do not require a visa for most Arctic expeditions, except Northwest Passage and Journey to the North Pole, where a visa is required for Russia.  Non British nationals are advised to check with the nearest embassy or consulate of the country you plan to visit.

Is there a doctor or any medical staff on board the ship?

All vessels have a clinic and carry an English speaking doctor.  Should you fall ill, the doctor will refer to the medical forms that you completed and returned to us before departure.

What clothing should I be packing for an Arctic trip?

For outdoor wear, bring wind and waterproof outer layers. Tight clothing and cotton is not recommended as it does not allow insulating air to be trapped. Wool, silk and fleece are all best for retaining heat. A complimentary parka will be provided on the ship and waterproof trousers are essential for all zodiac travel as well as activities on shore. Layers are the best way to stay warm and about six are reccomended.  A warm waterproof jacket is recomended and a warm fleece, gloves and a warm hat are essential.
