Frequently Asked Questions

About Your Trip

Am I likely to get seasick?

A lot of the Polar boats are built as scientific expedition ships and have a superb stabilising system (keeping the ship still is important for some scientific equipment). However, if the wind picks up the ship can roll and those who are susceptible to motion sickness should bring anti-seasickness pills just in case. You may find that you get your ‘sea legs’ after a couple of days. If you are a particular sufferer, it might be worth asking about cabins on a lower level on the ship (if available). The higher you go, the more you will feel the motion of the ship.

What kind of luggage is best for Polar trips?

We recommend that you bring sturdy, soft-sided luggage, which will be easier to stow in your cabin. Saying that, there isn't much they can't handle!

How cold does it get in Antarctica?

It’s summer time when you travel and on the Peninsula the temperature typically fluctuates a few degrees above and below zero. On an inclement day in a zodiac the wind chill will make it feel considerably colder than this. Remember the expedition boats are really snug and cosy so bring casual clothes you can relax in onboard. There’s no requirement to look like an explorer the whole journey.

How does money work on board?

At the conclusion of your voyage, you will be presented with an account. This will include any drinks from the bar, laundry or ship’s shop purchases for which you have signed. You may pay for this in US Dollars cash, credit card (Visa or MasterCard ONLY) or US dollars Traveller’s Cheques.

Allow US$13 for the airport tax on departure from Ushuaia and US$18 to depart from Buenos Aires (Please note that airport taxes do change often and it is recommended to include a little extra in case of this). You should also budget some dollars for sightseeing and meals/drinks in Argentina, the amount depending on your tastes.

Antarctica Specific Questions

If I’ve booked the kayaking how much can I expect to do?

Remember if you want to enjoy the kayaking this must be booked in advance. The actual amount of kayaking depends on the weather and the expedition route but you can expect to enjoy 5 or 6 kayaking excursions. These might be for an hour or for a full half day.

Do I need to bring my own wellington boots?

No. Boots are provided onboard. Bring numerous pairs of woolly socks though to keep your feet warm! We would also recommend a clothes peg or clip for your boots that you can clearly identify as your own, as this helps to track down your own pair of boots in the wet room.
