Reality Check

Travelling Conditions The trip is busy and some of the journeys can be tiring, though this can be attributed to the basic conditions en route rather than the actual style and length of travel. Most roads are metalled and in good condition.

It is a hot and humid destination and you should come prepared for this. The toilet and washing facilities at the Melinau Gorge and the subsequent places visited travelling to Kota Kinabalu are basic. You will need to carry your own equipment when climbing Mt Kinabalu or rent a porter for a little more than GBP1 per kilo of equipment. You will need very little; just a sheet sleeping bag and some warm and wet weather clothes.

For the trek to Melinau Gorge you will need to carry your equipment (normally not much - sleeping sheet, toiletries and a few clothes). If you wish to take any more items on trek, it may be possible to hire additional porters at an extra cost payable locally (approx. GBP11 per porter per day).

Normal group size and age

Min. 10, max. 24 students with 2 teachers, plus leader and local guides. Minimum age 14.
