This is a trek where it is preferable to have experience of long walks in varied and irregular terrain. Most of it is not difficult because the whole trip is at low altitude and most of the walks are day-walks. In Torres del Paine the trails are good although can be overgrown in places. However, the section in Fitzroy is quite demanding and requires some scrambling and scree walking, so you need to be sure-footed, and prepared for walks of around eight hours or more a day.
There are also 1 or 2 river wadings and a Tyrolean traverse. Here you are attached to a fixed rope across the river using a harness and carabina and you pull yourself backwards along the rope. It is a safe and fully guided process.
There is glacier walk where you need to use crampons but these are provided and you will be given instruction in their use. The walking is not dangerous or technically difficult, but you must be a confident walker.
Due to the unpredictability of the climate in southern Patagonia, you will need to be prepared for walking in all conditions, as the weather can change extremely rapidly.
The regions we visit on the trip are very remote, and you should be prepared to spend an extended period of time in areas where facilities and services are limited. Roads are mostly unpaved and although well-maintained they can be bumpy and dusty.
Normal group size and age
Normally 8 to 16, plus leader and appropriate local staff. Minimum age 18.
The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together. All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please see our Solo Departures page.
Fitness is important and you may have to improve yours before departure. Most treks at this grade compare to extended walking in mountainous terrain such as the Lakes of Snowdonia, but usually at significantly higher altitudes; climate and remoteness can also play a part. Previous trekking experience is desirable, but not vital if you are confident of your physical condition.
Walking & Trekking: Trips are wholly trekking-focused or simply include a significant number of walking days during the itinerary.
