This was not just a holiday,it was a complete adventure;so much was packed in as 'extras'.It was a experience that I shall never forget.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

I think that it was accepting the challenge of the primitive loop trail at Arches NP-a 7 mile hike which we began at 4.45am. I was warned that I would need help[although very fit ,I am 'mature' in years]. The help came in the form of strong hands that grasped mine ,and helped me over difficult rock faces. At the top we stopped  for lunch ,admiring the wonderful view through the double arch.

Another was looking at Bryce canyon for the first time and gazing at all the amazing rock formations. We were told that the mormon Bryce had once lived there .Asked what he thought of the place he said'It's a terrible place to lose a cow'!

Also swimming in a fresh water pool-fed by mountain streams at Moab ,surrounded by butterflies and dragonflies and not a whiff of chlorine around.

Sunrise and sunset over the Grand Canyon were pretty amazing too...........the colour changes .

The night sky took my breath away- the Milky Way a huge river of light......and it was the time for meteorites .

What did you think of your group leader?
Vern and J were brilliant;they went the second mile-always there supporting and encouraging.Who else but Brits could bring  torrential rain to to Arizona. Yes bucketing rain as we ate our meal at the camp site before heading  out to our tents for the night........only to be woken up at around 12.30am by a Navajo camp ranger ,telling us that a dam was about to burst, and the site had to be evacuated. Vern and J helped us get our tents down and we piled everything into the van, with J driving us off to the Navajo community centre ,where we spent the night in our sleeping bags on the gym floor. Poor Vern had stayed behind to mind the site:the next day was his birthday,so we celebrated with breakfast at the local diner, having had a whip round for the Navajo community projects. I did say that it was an adventure![and the dam did'nt burst]. Vern and J were totally calm and reassuring about everything. They were also great cooks. I can now whistle up 'Vern's apple dessert'-a little number involving pound cake, chopped apples, butter and brown sugar ,in no time.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
The notes said that trip was 'busy' and it was. Be prepared to 'rough' it........it's all about 'going back to nature' with those compost loos and 'cold water only' taps. You also have to be pretty fit to get the most out of it-and able to get up very early.I was there in the Summer heat, and we were often up by 4.00am and on the trail by 4.45am. Believe me ,it was well worth it. You have to trust your leaders-they soon learnt our strenghts and limitations ,and gave good advice.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
This trip was very good value; yes we had a rota for cooking, but support and help and suggestions were always available-even the shopping trips were fun, with people posted in all directions to find vital ingrediants. You do have to have a real community spirit; chatting around the camp fire at the end of the day was a lot of fun......yes we did grill marshmallows.Vern and J took us to some really amazing places that were not on the itinery, and both stayed for the last eveniong in Las Vegas ,where we all went to a lovely buffet and enjoyed the fountains performing to music........great stuff!!

A chance to see an amazing variety of sights across 4 US states, and as many Canyons and scenic views as you can take!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

There were many great moments - the places we visited were each quite unique, and the contrast between the grey and white granite of Yosemite and the red rocks of Zion and the other canyons, was amazing. Yosemite was beautiful, Zion was dramatic, Canyonlands was awe-inspiring, Bryce was fantastic and possibly my favourite, Arches was fascinating and the Grand Canyon, to use a phrase our leaders would have used, was 'Super Awesome'. A particular highlight was seeing 2 huge Elk near the campsite at the Grand Canyon. It was also good to see all the other wildlife including a bear in  the distance in Yosemite, mule deer, squirrels, chipmunks, a fox and bright blue birds.

We took the optional extra of horse/mule riding into Bryce Canyon. I can recommend it - you don't have to be able to ride in order to do this, as it is all at a walk. I would also recommend the helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon if you can afford it as the views are spectacular. We also did the sunset hummer drive which was good fun.

Unfortunately due to there still being snow higher up in Yosemite, we could not do Half Dome, although we had great views of it; and in Zion due to snow melt we could not wade 'The Narrows'. However we climbed Angel's Landing in Zion which was great fun.

What did you think of your group leader?
Christian and Amanda were good leaders, they were flexible and tried to ensure that everyone's needs were met. Once they realised I was not only a vegetarian but quite fussy over what I ate, they gave me a free rein to select my own vegetarian items when we did the group shop.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The trip notes do say that this is a full itinery and that there are early starts and long drives. This is true - I had not expected that these early starts would include several days at 4 and 5am, but having said that, after a few days of walking in the heat of midday, we all actually asked to get up an hour earlier than they suggested on the day of the Grand Canyon walk!

Be prepared to not only assist with camp chores like cleaning the van, helping to shop and washing up, but also to actually be reponsible for cooking some meals for everyone. Most of our trip had only expected to ASSIST with cooking, so it was a bit of a shock to be told we had to cook for 14 people!  However after a discussion with the trip leaders, they were very flexible and we agreed to re-do the rota so those who wanted to cook could do so, and the others would take over the other chores.

The trip notes said bring a 4 season sleeping bag but when we went (start of June) - it was up to a 100 degrees in the day, and still very warm at night so we didn't really need it. Perhaps this would only be needed for early departures. We were warned it was midgy season- but only had a problem with them briefly in one particular area of Arches National Park. The mosquitos were around at dusk in yosemite, so don't forget your repellant.

I recommend visiting the 36th floor of the Hyatt in Union Square when you arrive in San Francisco as they have a bar with a great view over the city.

Do as much as you can, but don't be afraid to opt out of the odd walk if you are feeling a little tired or need some time to yourself - the itinery is very full and there is not much time to just sit in camp and relax.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Overall it was a very good trip, we fitted in absolutely loads and saw so much. It is tiring and some days you are in the van for 8-9 hours, but after a while you get used to it, you have frequent stops and at least it is air-conditioned! The places you visit make it worth the long drives - so don't be put off.

This was an amazing trip on so many different levels from the diverse landscapes, the variety of hiking trips, the unusual camping "experiences", to driving along to great American music and comedy. Every day (and night) was full of laughs with a great bunch of people, lead by enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour leaders and I miss it every day !!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Difficult to give one as there were so many - first sighting of Yosemite peaks, getting to the top of Angel's Landing in Zion, riding a mule in freezing temps into Bryce canyon, sunsets in Arches and the canyonlands - especially at Dead Horse's Trail National Park (complete with sleeping bags and pizza !), helicopter over and hiking into the Grand Canyon.
What did you think of your group leader?

We had two tour leaders and I do think that the tour needs two with all the driving and camping activities.

They were really good about doing all the cooking whilst camping

On the whole they were great, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and on many occasions made the trip so much fun.

I would travel with either of them in America again !

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

You do need to be prepared to muck in with all camping activities but it is well worth it.

Do speak up about what food you want to eat before and during the camping trip.

You need to be prepared for very cold temperatures in some of the parks and canyons if camping in October.

Do the helicopter ride if you've not been in a helicopter before as it feels very safe.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
On the whole this was an incredible trip, well worth the long journeys across 4 states and despite the cold nights I would recommend the camping as you do have lots of laughs and get to know your fellow campers very well !

It was an excellent trip!  Plenty of variety and the scenery was astonishing.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Climbing Half Dome - and going down to the Colorado River, descending down the Grand Canyon and back up in a day - both were great achievements.
What did you think of your group leader?
The two group leaders were outstanding.  It was relaxed and great fun.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Have an open mind - and sleep under the stars instead of under canvas, if possible.  Go over-budget when shopping for the evening meal at the supermarket - it makes the evening conversations interesting.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The geology of those regions are very special.

I went in the beginning of October and thermals would have been useful at night in  some of hte places. None of us realised quite how cold it would be. A Sigg bottle with some hot water pretty much did the job for most people.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The landscapes were amazing - all in all it was a very good trip - would recommend it.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Viewing Yosemite Valley from Glacier Point is the best view I've ever seen - even better than the Grand Canyon. The silver granite gives Yosemite a unique character compared to the other National Parks we visited. The view across to Half Dome is just incredible.

What did you think of your group leader?
    Knowledgeable and accommodating.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Go up Half Dome (in Yosemite) and Angels Landing (in Zion) if you possibly can.

  • Bears at Yosemite

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The whole trip was very good. It is very difficult to say this was better than something else, but seeing the bears walking through our campsite at Yosemite was really something. During the night I was listening if I could hear them, and yes every night they came and walked around and tried to find some food. And the rangers shouting "Get out of here bear, get out".

What did you think of your group leader?
The group leaer "Emiko" was a good leader. She knew a lot about the places we visited. She was also very fit and was always walking quite fast.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
When they would go in September (end September - October) they should take very warm clothes. In Bryce it was at night - 7°C, and the ice was on our tents. In the morning you needed gloves while you were eating your breakfast, this nearly during the whole trip (except for Zion where it was warm)
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Sometimes long drives, and we were only 10 people in a van with 12 seats, it was a bit cramped. Not enough room to strech your legs.
