Reality Check
This trek is graded B and includes a wide choice of full day and half day walks, all of which are entirely optional.
We always return to our campsite, lodge or the vehicle to travel to our next destination. You only carry the essentials (picnic lunch, jacket, camera, etc.) in a daybag. All walks are optional and vary in their difficulty, so challenging or easier hikes can be taken.
In areas such as Denali National Park there are different hikes to choose from, so the group does not necessarily always walk together. Some of the day hikes allow walkers to 'do their own thing' so it is essential for participants to have a reasonable knowledge of the outdoors and to show a degree of common sense. The leader will suggest hiking routes and discuss them with the group and will then accompany those that participate in them. Those not wishing to take part in all of the hikes can take advantage of the many alternative optional outdoor activities available and the leader will also help advise with this.
This varied trip takes in the best of Alaskan scenery: ice-clad mountains and snow peaks, lakes, spruce forests and vast glaciers. The opportunities for wildlife spotting and the spectacular coastal scenery during the boat trips and float plane flights complete the adventure. We can be flexible with each day's schedule as there are more than 20 hours of daylight in the summer!
The trails vary a great deal, in some of the more developed parks some of the trails are well defined, whilst in most other areas there are no trails at all. Thus much of the hiking will be of the cross-country variety with no set 'destination'.
The scenery is always spectacular, but you will often be forced to cross small streams and walk on tundra - good boots are a must. All the walking is at moderate or low altitudes and therefore should not cause any altitude related problems.
Road conditions are mostly very good and all road travel is by private minibus. The road into the Wrangell Mountains is a dirt road. Please note that due to federal laws in Denali, your tour leader can't hike with you. They will, however, prepare you for all available walks.
Normal group size and age
Normally 6 to 12, plus leader. Minimum age 16.
Icons explained
The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together.
All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please
see our Solo Departures page.
No experience is necessary; those who take weekend hill walks in areas like the Peak District or Cotswold’s at home should manage a B-grade trek; good health and reasonable fitness are important. These Moderately graded departures are either fairly easy medium-duration walks or harder, shorter walks.
Walking & Trekking: Trips are wholly trekking-focused or simply include a significant number of walking days during the itinerary.
Wildlife: Trips may be wholly wildlife focused, or contain an element of wildlife viewing within a less specific itinerary.
Wilderness: Visit the deserts, jungles, plateaux, tundra and mountains of all seven continents, including Antarctica.
