Frequently Asked Questions

About Your Trip

What kind of food should I expect in Alaska?

Food in Alaska is of good quality, but because of the high standard of living and the cost of transporting food to far away places, it is more expensive than in Europe; this particularly applies to eating out in restaurants. There is no lack of fresh produce with the exception of a few places far inland. There is an abundance of excellent fresh fish, and if you like seafood, you can eat your heart out.

How difficult is the trekking?

This trek is graded B/C and includes a wide choice of full day and half day walks. We always return to our campsite, lodge or the vehicle to travel to our next destination. You only carry the essentials (picnic lunch, jacket, camera, etc.) in a daysack. All walks are optional and vary in their difficulty. In areas such as Denali National Park there are different hikes to choose from, so the group does not necessarily always walk together. Those not wishing to take part in all of the hikes can take advantage of optional outdoor activities available.

What is the standard of accommodation in Alaska?

We use a mixture of accommodation on this tour, as indicated at the end of each day on the itinerary. The hotel in Anchorage is of tourist class standard, rooms are on a twin share basis and all rooms have private facilities. The lodge in McCarthy is based on multi-share (3 or 4 people per room with shared facilities). When camping, two-person tents and all cooking equipment and eating utensils are provided. You will need to bring a sleeping bag. Foam sleeping pads are provided. We will camp at organised sites with good facilities. Showers are available at all of the sites and some have laundry facilities. Please that note campgrounds in Alaska tend to be much more rustic than those in the rest of the United States.

Do I need to take walking poles?

If you are used to walking with poles then you can take them with you. They are not essential though and the walk is manageable without them. It is personal preference but do remember to pack them as part of your main luggage to be stowed in the hold.

USA Specific Questions

I'm travelling via the US, do I need a visa?

Most clients are eligible to travel via the US under the US Visa Waiver Programme, however to do this you must register for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority). This must be done prior to departure - more details can be found at www.exodus.co.uk/usvisa.
