Incredible adventure through the prehistoric landscape of Cainama National Park. Hardly any other tourists around and very lucky with the weather.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Perfect sunrise at first camp on the way to Roraima, views from Roraima, first view of Angel Falls from our plane and swimming under Angel Falls.

What did you think of your group leader?
Good, organised with pilot of our airliner to swoop low over Angel Falls for free which was a real highlight.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

I took a 45L backpack (small enough for airline carry on) for the trek and as a day pack and a 100L duffel bag. This worked out pretty well, although depends how much you like to take with you when backpacking. You don't have to carry packed lunch which helps.

Sandals with good grip are essential when crossing rivers. Guide advised to do it in socks which also seemed to work. Long sleeves and long trousers needed for insects, especially the Puri Puri! Wide brim hat to stop sunburn from equatorial UV.

Take a trail seat cushion for long boat journey to Angel Falls as cushions provided are not great on the hard wooden bench seats.

After quickly leaving Caracas, we explored a country of amazing waterfalls, vast almost empty savannah and stunning mountains rising with shear faced cliffs almost 1000m tall with often only a single way to reach their summits. These summits were almost flat rocky moonscapes with their own ecosystems having 70percent of plants not fund elsewhere, crystal valleys and glorious views over surrounding countries. And best of all few other tourists.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The trip ended with us bathing in a pool at the bottom of the Angel Falls. By the time the water had fallen almost 3000ft it was a gloruous spray which descend over rocks into the pool which we relaxed in having travelled five hours upstream by canoe shooting many rapids on the way and then ploughed for one hour through the jungle to reach this fantactic sight. Luckily the canoe had an outboard motor on the back or it would have taken a lot longer.
What did you think of your group leader?
Elker was a very knowledgeablez guide who had done this trip many times before, had lived in Venezuela for a long tome and was thoroughly familiar with all the aspects of the trip and accommodated the different expectations and competences of a very disparate group extremely well. The fact that we were such a disparate group made the experience all the more enjoyable and allowed Elker demonstrate her leadership skills to the full.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Wear socks not sandals for fording the rivers, we spent about USD300 each during the trip as there were very few locally made goods which were worth buying as souvenirs. we h ired a porter for USD 200 between two of us to take our overnight kit to climb Roriama; this was in addition tp our spending money and was well worth the extra cost.

I would highly recommend this for someone considering something a little bit off the beaten trail.  There is a fair bit of travelling involved, but being able to walk in such spectacular scenery without being swamped by hordes of other travellers definitely makes it worthwhile. I also quite liked the fact that there is more to the trip than just the trek - a few days exploring Canaima and travelling up river to Angel Falls made it seem like a few holidays rolled into one.  The guide and support crew were all fantastic and - along with my fellow travellers - helped make the trip.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Peeking my head over the edge of Roaima mountain - a sheer kilometre drop which is not for the faint hearted.
What did you think of your group leader?
Both our group leader and the other support staff were great.  I was initially quite surprised that we didn't have a local Venezuelen tour leader, but Elke has lived there for thirty years which means she knows the place like a local but can also have a bit of distance to discuss the objectively.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
The trip notes don't include any reference to water purification tablets so we ended up scrambling around to find some at the airport.  There is plenty of fresh waterfall water if you want to risk it (which many of us did - with mixed digestive results) and the guide does have a central store, but having your own would give you a bit more flexibility in terms of grabbing some top-ups along the way.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Go for it - well worth the trip!

I thought I had booked a holiday, turned out to be an exciting adventurous challenge.  Still feels amazing 2 months on.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Hard to pick. Our first clear view from the top of Roraima looking back down at base camp. Swimming in the pool under the Angel Falls. The crazy walk behind the waterfalls at Canaima. Sitting next to the pilot in the cessna. Wading through the river up to our thighs hoping we didn't topple in.  Viewing the star filled sky from the toilet on the top of Mount Roraima.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Grasp every opportunity - swim in every waterfall and pool on offer.

Think carefully about carrying your own pack.  All our group managed it but it certainly made the hike challenging.

If you are going in the wet season, take your coat everywhere - you never know when you'll get a massive downpour - in fact I wish I'd taken an umbrella.

Pack as light as you can but don't stress if you are a couple of kg over - it's the size fitting in the plane really.

Lots of dry socks is a tip we were glad we followed.  Take a really good clear and sealable bag that you can take photos through for those wet but scenic moments.

Although the first 3 days are  mostly travelling the rest of the trip makes it worthwhile.

Expect little or no choice for food - almost every meal was just placed in front of us.

When you take your trousers off to do the river crossings you will get bitten - if you react badly to bites consider just getting wet instead.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
This adventure was amazing. The 6 day hike had breath taking views and it was so exciting to explore the top of Roraima.  It was great we had such a good amount of time on the top - we spent 8 hours exploring wondrous rockscape.  The journey to the Angel Falls was much more exciting than we had expected - keep your hands inside the boat.  Just not sure what to choose as my next holiday - it will be hard to beat.

Venezuela is simply beautiful; the waterfalls breathtaking.  Relatively undeveloped from a tourist perspective which is refreshing in many ways...fairly quiet and no souvenir shops by Angel Falls or on Roraima!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Walking behind the falls at Sapo.  I don't know why but I have wanted to walk behind a waterfall for years and it did not disappoint; I was grinning all day.
What did you think of your group leader?
Brilliant.  Lovely disposition, enthusiastic about what he was showing us and full of information.  Compared to other trips I have been on I thought he had a heavy responsibility, sharing the driving and also making us dinner at times (which was damn good).  Clearly concerned to ensure we got there safely but also that we got a lot out of the holiday.  He does say he would love an Exodus T-shirt and/or hat so PLEASE Exodus, send him one (or several)!
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The 10k weight limit is tough when you know that you have to pack for heat, cold and wet, I wouldn't scrimp on socks though as it can be tough to get walking socks dry even when hot as it can be very humid and there is nothing like clean dry socks ;-).  They don't actually weigh your luggage at the Cessna flight so you can probably get away with a few kilos over but not worth risking more than that. Take your swim gear EVERYWHERE...loads of opportunities to swim/bathe. Ladies without a handy towel holding partner may find a two piece easier to get in and out of while preserving their dignity as there are few changing areas.  Take some bio degradeable soap.

Be aware that the hotel in Canaima is very basic. Cold shower and you will probably end up geting the whole bathroom and the toilet roll wet as there are no shower curtains....!

You will get bitten....nothing seems to work, even those using deet got bitten.

When in Canaima and getting booze (assuming you do), don't buy white wine..there is nowhere to chill it.

If you do hire a porter, I think you could get away with a 30L daysack for the Roraima hike so you may want to do that instead of carrying a 50L rucksack up half empty!  Take a small dry bag and depending on what you you are using to carry your luggage in generally, you may want to take another lightweight bag (maybe a larger dry bag) for when you leave your excess stuff behind while on trek.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Go for the scenery, go for the mesmerising water, go for the unusual hike, go for the swirling clouds on top of Roraima but go.

Excellent! A friend of a friend who was on the Explore equivalent remarked on how much better our equipment was for Roraima and that our group had more "get up and go". I couldn't disagree! Well organised

Excellent! Roberto single-handedly ran the trip very well.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Nake sure that you keep warm on top of Roraima
