This trip is for those wanting to explore the beautiful central mountains and wilderness areas of the USA, whilst learning about the region's remarkable wildlife and geology. It is suitable for both walkers and wildlife lovers due to the varied itinerary. Whilst most of the trip will be high, it's very unlikely that we'll go above an altitude of 3,000m (usually 1,800-2,500m).
You should be reasonably active to get the most out of this trip, however, most walks are optional so you may choose to participate in only some of them if you wish. Please note that particularly for early season departures, walks may need to be shortened due to avalanche risk or snow on the trails. Walks are mostly done on well maintained trails, although some sections might be affected by water damage or be a little exposed. Expect trails to be quite rocky - a walking pole for stability is recommended.
The roads are mostly paved and in very good condition, but there are some long travelling days due to the huge distances covered. All journeys have regular stops built in to break up the distances and for any wildlife that we may spot from our vehicle, since most of the routes pass through fascinating scenery. We generally use campgrounds for more than one night at a time, allowing us a base from which to explore each area. Inevitably this means that in the morning we'll need to take a short drive to the start of our walking trail or to view wildlife or scenery. In Yellowstone, traffic is often held up by 'wildlife road jams' so you should be prepared for additional time in the minibus.
Normal group size and age
Normally 5 to 12, plus local leader and specialist guides. Minimum age 16.
The vast majority of Exodus adventures are adult group holidays. Groups are always small in size. We strongly believe that this adherence to small groups means a better experience for all; more time with your guide, less waiting around and a reduced impact on the communities and environments visited.
Each group is generally made up of like-minded travellers - with singles, couples and friends all joining in together. All these trips are suitable for single travellers, but if you prefer to travel with clients booking individually, please see our Solo Departures page.
No experience is necessary; those who take weekend hill walks in areas like the Peak District or Cotswold’s at home should manage a B-grade trek; good health and reasonable fitness are important. These Moderately graded departures are either fairly easy medium-duration walks or harder, shorter walks.
Walking & Trekking: Trips are wholly trekking-focused or simply include a significant number of walking days during the itinerary.
Wildlife: Trips may be wholly wildlife focused, or contain an element of wildlife viewing within a less specific itinerary.
Wilderness: Visit the deserts, jungles, plateaux, tundra and mountains of all seven continents, including Antarctica.
