A spectacular short trek to the foot of Kanchenjunga - the world's third highest peak

Trekkers and south-east face of Kanchenjunga

With valleys ranging from only a few hundred metres above sea level to some of the highest peaks of the Himalaya, the tiny state of Sikkim has incredibly varied scenery. This trek passes through thickly forested valleys and tea estates to the alpine pastures beneath Kanchenjunga (8598m). From our high base camp at Lake Samiti there is time to explore the surrounding glaciers and ascend the 4940m Goecha La for superb views of the immense ice cliffs of Kanchenjunga's south-east face. After the trek there is time in Darjeeling, the most spectacular of all the Indian hillstations, set amongst tea plantations and connected to the plains below by the famous Toy Train.

Itinerary

Day 1	Depart London.
Day 2	Arrive Calcutta. Rest of the day free for sightseeing.
Day 3	Fly to Bagdogra and drive to Gangtok.
Day 4	Sightseeing in Gangtok.
Day 5	Drive to Yoksum.
Day 6 - 7	Trek through lowland jungle. Our first views of Kanchenjunga are at Dzongri (4030m).
Day 8 - 9	Trek along the ridges through scrub juniper and rhododendron to Thangshing (3930m). Acclimatisation day with walk to Lam Pokhri Lake.
Day 10	Walk through glacial moraines to our base camp at Lake Samiti.
Day 11	Trek to the Goecha La (4940m) for superb close-up views of Kanchenjunga and the surrounding peaks and glaciers. Return to Thangshing.
Day 12 - 13	Return to Yoksum via a different route through forest and jungle.
Day 14	Drive to Darjeeling and explore the town.
Day 15	Drive to Bagdogra; fly to Calcutta.
Day 16	Fly to London.
