Lhasa and a pilgrimage to holy Mount Kailas, the navel of the universe

Monks at Saga Dawa festival

Mount Kailas' mystical importance undoubtedly relates to its extraordinary appearance and location. It is one of the high points of the Tibetan plateau, from which four of the great rivers of the Indian sub-continent flow. We begin our epic journey with a stunning flight over Everest to Lhasa, where we spend several days visiting the city's main landmarks including the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. From Lhasa we have a spectacular drive westwards across the desolate Tibetan Plateau to Lake Manasarowar and further on to Mount Kailas. We will join the many Tibetan and Indian pilgrims on the challenging circuit around the mountain, then at Darboche, below Mt Kailas, we will witness the Saga Dawa flagpole raising ceremony.
