Pilgrimage to holy Mount Kailas, the Tibetan navel of the universe

Mt Kailash and Chui Gompa from shore of Lake Manasrowar

Mount Kailas' mystical importance undoubtedly relates to its extraordinary appearance and location. It is one of the high points of the Tibetan Plateau, from which four of the great rivers of the Indian subcontinent flow. It is at once both one of the world's most revered holy places, and also amongst its least touristed.

On this itinerary we will join the many Tibetan and Indian pilgrims on the challenging circuit around the mountain; completing the circuit is believed to bring good fortune and to erase the sins of a lifetime.

Mount Kailas is found in a particularly remote and inhospitable area of Tibet. We trek through this rugged landscape, dotted with streams and lakes, with the diamond-shaped black rock peak of Kailas always in view.

We also spend time exploring the area around Manasarovar Lake, one of the highest in the world. This lake is exceptionally beautiful; the contrast between the stark Tibetan landscape and its clear turquoise waters is stunning.

What makes this trip responsible?

This trip employs local leaders and staff through all aspects of the trip whenever possible.  To be using local leaders in Tibet is a very important factor of this trip that ensures that Tibet benefits as much as possible from our tourism. We use predominantly locally owned and run accommodation on this trip which benefits the local community.
A portion of this tour is spent camping which reduces our energy consumption for the whole trip. Furthermore, whilst camping, the leaders ensure that we minimise impact as much as possible by such things as clearing up camping areas after use.

Adventure Pioneers - This trip gets our vote!

Adventure PioneersEach year we run a competition that challenges you to design a trip for our Adventure Pioneers range. Out of the entries received we choose the most inspiring, sustainable and appealing to launch as an Exodus trip. They are pioneering. They are different. They are the very best of Exodus Travels. This trip breaks the mould and extends the boundaries of adventure travel.
