This would have been a great holiday, had it not been spoilt by my luggage being delayed in both directions.  Despite constant phone calls by our dedicated group leader, I saw my bag for all of about 5 minutes on the holiday, when we arrived back at Naples airport to fly back home again!  I strongly recommend that Exodus reconsiders its decision to use these indirect flights, particularly with such a disorganised carrier.  I appreciate that the direct flights are more expensive; cheaper alternatives might be to start the bus transfer from Rome or to travel from Rome to Naples by train (only an hour and a half).

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The views from Mount Vesuvius were wonderful; we were lucky to have excellent weather.  Herculaneum on the free day was also well worth visiting, and is very different from Pompeii.  And the food in the hotel is divine!!  Finding TWO gelateria open in Amalfi on Christmas Day was also pretty special, even if they weren't cheap!
What did you think of your group leader?
Morten was excellent.  He was very helpful regarding the luggage problems, and kept badgering the airline.  He did a great job of looking after everyone, and was good fun to have around.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Yes - don't take the group flights!  It really spoils your holiday when you have to get by with next to nothing to wear for a week.  The holiday itself was good, but I will not be flying with this particular airline again.  If you must take the group flights, and they are indirect, then take some of your clothes in your hand luggage!  Don't even think of putting your walking boots in the hold.  It wasn't just me either; all 9 of us on the outward flight failed to get our luggage on arrival at Naples.  7 of the bags were delivered to the hotel 2 days later, but 2 of us were without our stuff all week long.  When we turned up at Naples to fly back, it turned out that our bags had been there for 3 days, but the staff had not registered them on the system, and so they were still showing as 'untraced'.  And then they did it again on the way back too, and we all had to register our luggage as lost for a second time at Heathrow.  Again, some people had to wait up to a week to get it back.

Also, please read the documentation with regard to the difficulty of the walks before you book. I was nearly put off going on the trip altogether by some of the review comments on the website which suggested that the walks were far more strenous than the grading and trip notes suggest.  One review says that it should be a B/C; well, I have been on a B/C and, believe me, it was far more strenous than the Amalfi coast!  I have also been on two other A/B trips, and the Amalfi coast trip was the easiest of these.  You need to read not just the trip notes, but also the Exodus definition of its grades - "leisurely" in Exodus terms does not mean stroll in the park!  I believe that this trip is correctly classified as A/B.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Those of us who have been on Exodus holidays before were disappointed to find that the participant lists are no longer issued, due to the DPA.  Would it not be possible to add a question to the booking form asking whether people were happy for their name to be sent to other particpants in advance?  I am sure that 99% of travellers would agree to this, as the lists were always very valuable during the trip when trying to remember everyone's name.  It is also useful to know whether others are travelling on the group flight.

    Exodus Response

Exodus always endeavours to offer British Airways flights on all trips, however, when they are unable to offer us any flights, we must find alternative carriers for our clients.

It is unfortunate that Alitalia lost several pieces of client luggage and I would like to assure you that these issues are always raised with the airline following the trip. Alitalia feels they managed to get the luggage to the airport and it is simply regrettable that the organisation at Naples airport is not as efficient as hoped.

We are unable to reinstate client details on Final Joining Instructions due to the Data Protection Act. However, we have put in place the Exodus Forums where clients can chat to fellow travellers before and after their trip. This has proved successful with Exodus clients.

The social mix of the group was ideal, no cliques formed and everyone got well together. This was due in no small part to our guide Morten who made sure that everyone felt included. He had a very nice manner which enabled him to steer us and keep to schedule without making us feel hassled

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The views of the Amalfi coast and especially the day trip to Ravello.
What did you think of your group leader?
Outstanding. His guidance on the choice of options for the free day was excellent with impartial advice that enabled all of the party to select the activity that suited them best. He was immensely patient with our incessant questions and always came with an answer if he did not know right away. Morten is a great credit to Exodus.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
A great holiday for those who like a moderately active holiday with a bit of culture and time to relax.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
This was the first time I had been on holiday by my self for 25 years or so. I felt a bit nervous about going solo but the whole Exodus experience put me at ease straight away. So I had a truly brilliant time. I liked staying in a family hotel that was not on the tourist track but genuinely Italian; I felt that I had experienced a bit of real Italy!

Once I arrived in Italy (thanks a bunch for giving us a knackered plane, BA), it was excellent. The hotel was very good with excellent food (not forgetting the wine), the walks had stunning views and weren't too strenuous, and the group leader (Steve) was marvellous.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
While Amalfi, Ravello, Positano & Pompeii are very good, the best moment had to be going to the very top of Vesuvius and then down just inside the crater - which we were only able to do because the group leader had got us a guide from the geological survey team.
What did you think of your group leader?
Very good - balanced looking after all the team members with being fun... and a wicked line in jokes. Getting us a couple of expert guides (Pompeii & Vesuvius) was very useful, especially at Vesuvius (see above). Very highly recommended.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Get (or borrow) walking poles; there are a lot of steps, and they will take some of the impact off your knees.

I went in early November, and the weather was warm enough then with only one day's rain; I wouldn't want to do it in the middle of summer.

It really was a tremendous holiday.   The walking, group members, scenery, weather were perfect.  And what can I say about the Guide, absolutely brilliant.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
When the Guide took us into a part of the National Forest (above Amalfi) which is untouched by human hand.   You have to have a key to get in and it was just awesome.
What did you think of your group leader?
Morten was fantastic.  Nothing was too much trouble and his local knowledge made the holiday all the more special.   Everyone in the group had nothing but praise for him.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If they get Morten as their Guide no advice is needed.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Be prepared for a lot of steps!!

A beautiful spot, lots of sunshine and plenty of interesting walks. We had a great group too.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The nature reserve with fantastic rock formations, bubbling streams, wildlife and the rainbow in the waterfall were just magical.
What did you think of your group leader?
A thoroughly energertic girl, very modest about her sporting abilities, who was genuinely interested in her job, the walks, the wildlife, and conveyed her enthusiasm for the place.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
July and August are probably not the best months to walk in Amalfi--a bit too hot! If you have the choice, May or Sept/Oct would be a better bet.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Don't forget to eat plenty of ice-cream. If offered the opportunity, get to the top of Vesuvius, the views are marvellous. The gardens of the Villa Cimbrano in Ravello are idyllic. However, this is an active holiday and wouldn't suit if you were planning to laze away the days in the sun.

A great holiday, fantastic scenary, good food, great people - more challenging than I expected, but still fun.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Visiting the nature reserve with the waterfalls; seeing the ancient paper mills ruins; the natural arches in Capri; climbing Vesuvius.

What did you think of your group leader?

Brilliant - friendly, sociable, good organiser, knowledgeable, fun, good sense of humour and possibly the fittest person in the world!

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If this is your first walking holiday, as it was mine, you might find this tougher than you're expecting. It's perfectly doable as long as you're quite fit and don't mind hundreds of steps, but it's not a stroll in the park! And getting the local bus back from Amalfi to the hotel is pretty chaotic and overcrowded - prepare yourself for a scrum.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The guys at the hotel were really great, but it would have been nice if there was a swimming pool/ sauna/ steam room to unwind those aching muscles. See if you can persuade them to build one - they've got space!

The local buses from Amalfi are so crazy, it's probably better to organise a private transfer if you can... at least then people have the choice. Our guide did this for us a couple of days when traffic was bad.
