Trins, Austria - nice scenery, great walks, good company,  good food especially the Kaiserschmarrn in the Huts. Excellent leaders. Great idea having 2 grades of walking available every day. Highly recommend this trip. Not a lot of walkers around other than Exodus group so it was great having the mountains to ourselves ! Very relaxing holiday overall. 6 days walking which suited us but there is no problem taking a day off if you want to and it is only about 35 mins to Innsbruck by bus & train.

What did you think of your group leader?

Both of our leaders Bob & Chris were excellent. They work well together even thought they have different styles of leading. Bob has a great knowledge of the local area and knows almost everyone you will encounter on the walks! Chris is a quiet spoken individual with a great dry sense of humour that suits the Irish ! Good storytellers as well which was good at dinner time & they spent equal amounts of time with all members of our group even swapping places each night at the dinner table.

They were very helpful with information on places to visit/stay in Innsbruck & Munich as we were visiting both cities for a few extra days.

We would like to have either of them as leader on future walking holidays.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Trins is a quiet village. So be prepared for a relaxing holiday with no late nights!

Supermarket is good for snacks, drinks, fruit, bread etc but is not open on Sundays.

No pharmacy in Trins so bring all meds you may need with you.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Enjoyed having coffee & cake every day on our return from walks.

    Book it now!

Stay an extra few days if you can and spend some time in Munich, we did and there is loads to see in and around Munich, very nice city. Bob picked an ideal hotel for us and we walked almost everywhere from it.

Excellent organisation of travel and hotel, and six days of walking and choice of two walks each day. poor communications about my diet and my partners diet. Hotel and leader were not adequately informed. Weather excellent (not an Exodus provision!) Walks adequate but could have been longer, not necessarily more ascent or descent. Did not appreciate at all the need to be back at hotel for 4.30 p.m. when dinner was at 7.30 pm. This was a walking holiday not a coffee and cakes holiday. And per usual insufficient vetting of walking experience and ability. Only three men (including me did all 6 A walks and only one woman (my partner) did 5 out of the six A walks. So when lesser able people came on the A walks it was not ideal.  And personally do not need to visit refugios for lunch - waste of time.

What did you think of your group leader?
    Both very good
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
not really, just make sure what you are signing up for, the fitter yuo are the more you can do and the more you will enjoy it.
Is there anything else you would like to add?

I proposed an extended wall programme from Trins on say two individual weeks one spring one autumn, C+ using the current walk programme and adding an hour or two to the day to make the days more interesting and worthwhile.

Dissapointed that my suggestion did not make the 2011 programme.

I am sure there is a market (not all season) for six days of good C+ walks 9 to 5 or 9 to 6 with adaquate stops for refreashment - please think outside of the box - change is good for the soul!

    Exodus Response

We appreciate Mr Schofield's feedback. The Multigrade aspect is the concept we wanted for this trip, in order to allow couples or groups of friends who have different walking abilities to travel together. Although we did not change TET for 2011,  Mr Schofield's suggestions have been noted and considered.  At the moment we feel we are catering for our demand with fewer trips graded C/D, and more B or C. We offer a couple of C/D and D trips in Europe (TWC for instance), which are not multigrade, and many more in the rest of the world. You will find all of Exodus' challenging/tough walking trips here.

A really fantastic experience - I am surprised exodus do not 'sell' the multi-grade holidays better

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Fantastic views made even more rewarding with the challenge of getting there!

Realising that maybe I am capable of more strenuous walks tahn I thought

Appreciating the essence of Austrian culture in a well run traditional hotel in a small village

What did you think of your group leader?

Both leaders were impressive and had a great sense of humour (even at their own expense)

The way the leaders used the 2 grade system to cope with different abilities yet keep the group in touch was good

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
Dont be put off by the fact that the walking may be too difficult - the lower group is meant for less experienced walkers and effectively only travels as fast as the slowest walker - and no-one minds this - in fact it allows more time to enjoy the views
Is there anything else you would like to add?

I think exodus should seriously think of expanding multi-grade walking holidays like this one and explaining better in the publicity exactly what levels of walking are coped with.

I know plenty of people who would come with their friends if they realised how the different grades handled different abilities - especially couples with different abilities. In fact most days the 2 groups met on the slopes - often with lunch together.

Also note that Bob & Chris worked well together and are a great advert for exodus

Trins and the surrounding area is a wonderful place for walking, with amazing scenery, fantastic hospitality and food.  Having the choice of B or C walks each day was brilliant, as you could just see how you felt and how much you wanted to do.  Ending each day with a sauna at the hotel was lovely.  The guides were so helpful and enthusiastic and we are definitely going again next year!  We loved it!!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The whole trip was exactly what I had wanted.  In fact Andrew and I did the trip twice, back to back; so for two weeks instead of one and both weeks were really great.  We had thought we may do all B walks the first week and all C walks the second week but actually we ended up doing nearly all C walks and even the second time we enjoyed them as much.  It is so good to have that flexibility.
What did you think of your group leader?
Bob and Chris were great!  Hope they are both there next year when we go back.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
If you have never been to Austria, this is definitely a must!  I have fallen in love with it.

This was a very good trip. It was away from the "more famous" alpine areas of Lauterbrunnen or Chamonix around which I'd walked in previous summers but the scenery ably matched them. All the classic alpine features were present and correct - snowy peaks against blue skies, scree slopes, cool blue lakes, and flower-filled meadows. We also saw a chamois, heard some marmots wolf-whistling and even terrified a poor little black salamander. And for those walkers, such as I, who enjoy our treats, the mountain huts were well stocked with coffee and local cakes - yum!

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
Going up to the Padasterjoch through forest and meadow, and by scree slopes, and being rewarded with anmamazing 360 degree view which encompassed every place we'd walked on the preceding days, and seeing a chamois on the slopes far below.
What did you think of your group leader?

The group had two leaders - Bob and Carole. My walks were led by Bob. Bob had a great knowledge of the mountain landscape, wildlife and the myriad flowers and shrubs in those high-up parts. Bob's knowledge of the local characters and customs, from many years experience, also provided an amusing picture of Austrian alpine small-town life. Familiarisation with the week at the outset, with each successive day's walks, and with the arrangements for the return to the airport were all handled very well.

Bob and Carole had a good rapport in the evenings - they made a good double act ;-)

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Make sure you take full waterproofs (top and bottom) and showers can suddenly appear and when it rains it absolutely buckets it down. It can also get very, very hot (29 C plus) so sun-block, shades, a hat and a good size water bottle are necessary companions.

Also note that though Scotland then England recently introduced complete smoking bans this doesn't mean the rest of the world has followed our example - the hotel bar does still allow smoking in a small section so you may experience faint odour flashbacks to early 00s British pubs, but it certainly is _not_ a discomfort!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

The hotel was very good. A help-yourself brekkie and four course dinner with coffee and cake on return from each day's walk (result!). My single room was very spacious. The hotel bar was homely and having a tab-for-the-week was most helpful!

I'd considered C grade walking holidays but was concerned that if they were too tough I'd hold back the group or be stuck with nothing to do all day - I can do a Munro no problem, but doing 6 Munros one day after the other might be a different proposition! This holiday solves that quandry by having two leaders and offering a choice of B or C grades. So, it allowed me to try the C grade walks knowing that if they were too tough (or if I fancied an easier day) I could revert back to B grade. I found the C grade walks fine, buit it was still good to have the alternative there if needed.

Pleasant, enjoyable walking on generally good trails.  Beautiful mountain views.  Pleasant hotel.  As with previous Exodus trips, characters in the group contributed to our enjoyment of the holiday.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Views from above the clouds when we got to the summit of Nosslachjoch.

    Walk to and from Tribulaunhaus.

Celebrating a fellow traveller's birthday on the final evening.

Wildlife spottings: marmot, salamander, chamois, deer, stone marten, various bird species.

What did you think of your group leader?
Bob and Carol were both very efficient, knowledgable and punctual.  However, their interaction with the group sometimes lacked sensivity.
Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Efficient local public transport, right to and from the hotel door, right on time, every time.

Given our previous experience of B/C grade walks with Exodus, the walks on this holiday were easier than we expected (elevation and length of each walk only just qualified as B and C).

Be aware that on the days when mountain huts (these are more like cafes) were used for lunch, the break was a minimum of one hour.

Good quantities and generally good standard of food at breakfast and evening meal at the hotel (inclusive).

Is there anything else you would like to add?
We were surprised at the poor standard of fire safety in the accommodation where we were staying.  Given that we were in western Europe we would expect visible fire instructions in the room, fire alarm and smoke detectors (none of which appeared to be present).

    Exodus Response

Exodus always expect that, where possible, the properties we use meet the required safety regulations. Hotel Wienerhof has an annual fire inspection and if all the relevant requirements are not met then its license would be withdrawn immediately. As the hotel has regularly passed these inspections, we are happy to continue working with them however, as part of our Operational Quality policy we are working with hoteliers in Austria and the other relevant countries to ensure that where possible, EU standards are met. Please be assured that it is very much our policy to ensure that hotels are safe for our clients to stay in.

In addition to this, the leader always briefs all guests on fire safety and recommends that all clients check the escape route from their bedrooms on the first night.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?
The superb views were breathtaking, we will return to this area.
What did you think of your group leader?

As there were two grades of walk avaliable on this trip (B & C), there were 2 leaders. Both were excellent.

Bob Mason's knowledge of the local flora gave an added interest to his walks (C grade). He also told some interesting anecdotes on local history. His walks were well lead and enjoyed by all.

Carol Mold's excellent advice on outdoor walking skills and equipment were well received by less experienced group members. She adjusted her pace well to suit the groups abilities (B grade). She is a very likable person and her walks were also well lead and thoroughly enjoyable.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?
The weather in this region can be very changeable - take adequate clothing for all weather conditions. An  umbrella would be very useful and a waterproof rucksack cover is essential.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The local food is very good. The hotel used is of standard quality, but adequate. The staff are very friendly and eager to please. Local transport is excellent. The small local supermarket is well stocked, but according to local laws cannot stock medicinal products and the nearest chemist is several miles away, so take your own basic remedies with you.
